The Asian or Asiatic elephant (Elephas maximus) is the only living species of the genus Elephas and is distributed in Southeast Asia from India in the west to Borneo in the east. The largest living land animal in Asia, males grow to an average height of 9-feet and an average weight of 4 tons. Asian elephants are classified as Endangered by the IUCN.
Elephant Trails, the National Zoo's home for its Asian Elephants, was constructed between 2008 and 2013. The first part of the $52-million project opened in September 2010, expanding the zoo's former elephant area with a 5,700-square-foot barn, two new yards and a quarter-mile walkway through woods. The Giant Panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca, literally "black and white cat-foot", A大熊猫, dà xióng māo, literally "big bear cat") is a large, distinctive looking black and white bear native to mountain ranges in south Central China, most notably the Sichuan province. As a result of farming, deforestation and other development, the panda has been driven out of the lowland areas where it once lived and is currently categorized as vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.
The David M. Rubenstein Family Giant Panda Habitat at the Smithsonian National Zoo is a state-of-the-art indoor and outdoor exhibit designed to replicate the pandas' natural habitat in China. The zoo's pandas, Mei Xiang and Tian Tian, have lived there, on lan from the China Wildlife Conservation Association, since 2000. Their first male cub, Tai Shan, was born in 2005 and returned to China in 2010. Their first female cub, Bao Bao, was born in 2013, and then their second male cub, Being Bei, followed in 2015.
