I smelt the ice! The smelt is an anadromous (both fresh and saltwater) fish found along the Atlantic coast and also in the fresh waters of Québec and the Maritime Provinces. Southern Arizona Smelter Company was short-lived, 1907 to 1910. It was the smelter for the first Silverbell mine, north of Tucson. Paintball, graffiti and target practice is what it's destiny is of late.
The River Rivelin rises on the eastern border of the Peak District National Park and flows north-eastwards to the outskirts of Sheffield at Malin Bridge. The three mile stretch of the lower Rivelin valley eventually had a total of 20 watermills and 21 mill dams, possibly the greatest number over that distance in the country. From the 16th to 20th centuries, these mills supported a range of industries including grinding and finishing blades, optical glass grinding, paper making (from rags), corn milling, lead smelting, metal forging and wire drawing.
All the mills workshops and forges have long since been demolished, although the foundations of a number, remain.
The weirs, dams and goits of the former mills now form a linear nature reserve and the volunteers of the Rivelin Valley Conservation Group help maintain public access and to promote the protection and management of Rivelins countryside, wildlife and historical interest.
The most famous and exciting rapids along the lower Animas are those at the foot of Smelter mountain here in town. We went through them once, then took the raft out, drove back up stream, then came down them again. The second time Anna and Julie stayed back and Jackson took the paddle.
