Photo taken in August 2007: never change a signpost too quickly !
The Aust Ferry was a ferry service that operated across the River Severn. It ran between the village of Aust in England and the village of Beachley, in Gloucestershire but near Chepstow in Wales.
It was generally known as the Beachley Ferry on the Welsh side, and the Aust Ferry on the Bristol side. Before the Severn Bridge was opened in 1966, it was the only crossing of the estuary for road traffic between the West Country and South Wales below Gloucester, thus allowing cars to avoid a 60 mile road journey.
Signpost to the village of Blackbrook in Derbyshire that seems to have gone very dark. Photo Taken: 30/01/17
With two arms and its annulus finial missing, this Stanton post looks rather sad. Since this photo taken around 2006 the post has been painted. Grid ref: TL 5314 3786
This signpost is at the end of Ferry Road very near The Anchor public house. I've read that the Centenary Walk follows the bank of the River Crouch for a while before heading inland to join footpaths going towards Hockley. I have walked some of this route decades ago without knowing about this name. I'm not able to do so nowadays though.
Presumably the H.P.C. on the signpost is Hullbridge Parish Council.
***update See comment from John Myers below for some detailed information. Important for anyone thinking of walking the route***
