Storyboards are like a cartoon version of the movie. They show the story in pictures, which helps in planning the sets, the camera placement and the overall visual flow of the film.

Some watercolour sketches for a backcloth design for Llangollen Operatics production of 'Carousel'. A lot of the musical takes place against a sea side back drop which will be painted on a back cloth 7 meters by 4 meters. These are the design ideas for that backdrop.

Set in the land of Soap Opera, a Welsh trio arrive in Australia for a backpacking holiday…

The set was the television set of an Australian soap opera; a large open-plan house with sliding glass doors leading to a swimming pool in an affluent suburb of North Sydney. The production actually starred two real life soap actors, Lucinda Cowden who played Melanie Pearson in Neighbours and Richard Norton who played Simon Fitzgerald in Home and Away.

This was the opening scene of the play, Richard appeared dripping wet behind the sliding doors as if straight from the pool while Right Here, Right Now by Fat Boy Slim blasted loudly. Costume shopping for this particular outfit was certainly memorable.

low res picture of a moodboard for an upcoming commercial production. example of a product that i would never use, yet i'm willing to sell it.

mood boards are just that - they tell the clients and the advertising agency what my intentions are, though they try not to be too specific - because the clients will often misinterpret moodboards as pictographic shopping list.

a good mood boards sells the film long before the pre-production starts. if i am successful, then i will have already by this stage gained the confidence of the client, the agency, the producer and the director, which allows me to work in peace without being micro-managed.

by tomorrow afternoon, friday, i will know whether the mood board did the job or not.

“Saturday Night Forever adds to the new cool Wales phenomenon.” The Scotsman

"As a political event, Saturday Night Forever, is important" Western Mail

"An eye opening and captivating piece of tragicomedy" Theatre in Wales

"Saturday Night Forever is a roller-coaster ride through Cardiff's night life. It follows Lee, a 20-something living in the heart of the city as he finds the love of his life, and then loses him again. A fast, real, and touching story about what it means to be young and gay in urban Wales."

The minimal set was designed on a low budget to tour in the boot of a car, and was created using some of the off cuts of the opal polycarbonate left over from My Piece Of Happiness. The square panels were painted with thick bright paint from which graphics were scratched out referencing some of Derek Jarman’s last paintings.

The hanging panels could be back lit with white light, which made the scratch marks glow, or front lit using gels the same colour as the paint which made them glow vividly in the surrounding blackness. The sound and lighting designer and technician took his place on the stage throughout the performance and took the part of the dj for the nightclub scene. I'm now married to him.
