(62/365) Today I met the business district of Paris, La Défense. I liked to leave the old Paris and enter this world of tall glass and steel buildings. It was like a breathe of fresh air.
Hoy conocí el distrito financiero de París, La Defense. Me gustó salir de la antigua París y entrar en este mundo de altos edificios de acero y vidrio. Fue como una bocanada de aire fresco.
The Rotterdam Central Library is one of the city's best architectural curiosities. With a 6-story cascading facade, industrial design and angular yellow tubes, it is one of the most controversial buildings in the city.
Built in 1977 as a result of a sensational architectural contest between two Delft University architects, the winner was Jaap Bakema.
A striking element is the air-conditioning system which are actually the yellow-painted pipes on the exterior. This received a mixed reaction from critics, with some saying that the design was copied from the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
The library houses one of the biggest Record Libraries in Europe. There are also a Library Theatre, a Selexyz Donner bookstore, a cafe, internet terraces on the first and top floors and lecture halls. Moreover, the library has the world's largest collection of Erasmus' works, the famous Dutch Renaissance humanist and theologian.

St. Mary’s, the Parish Church of Rye in East Sussex
stands at the highest point of this superb Cinque Port.
Nowadays, for a small fee, visitors can climb
the wooden steps, beyond the Belfry, to the top of the Tower.
The view in all directions is marvellous.
Beyond the fascinating buildings of the town itself,
One can see the River Rother, harbour, Romney Marsh,
Dungeness and Winchelsea.
This image shows the view north, down Lion Street,
to where The Old Grammar School stands, in the High Street.
Old Rye is a place of sensational architecture with
some buildings dating back to the 12th. Century.
Rye itself dates back to Roman times, at least.
It was then a busy port in a bay on the English Channel.
Subsequent silting and land reclamation mean that it is an inland town.
However, it has become a landmark as the Old Town
stood on former cliffs, with St. Mary’s Church at the summit.
With miles of flat marsh in the surrounding area,
Rye is hard to miss.
It is a unique and intriguing town and certainly
one of my favourites in South-East England.

1291 Hammocks Gap Road. This sensational architectural gem demonstrates what charm can be extracted from a simple one-story design.
"Lagniappe" - executed in 1964/65 this French Pavilion styled residence has 12 ft ceilings, floor to ceiling windows and doors, exposed steel, timber beams, and fireplace. A 1999 addition - as seen above on the left - was a very sympathetic appendage.

Must be symmetry obsessed. It seems my back-catalogue is filling up with symmetrical shots. Must get less orthogonal.
Anyhow, this is the Victorian reconstruction of the west end of St David's Cathedral. Not sensational architecture in any respect, but certainly an appropriate response to the building it is attached to.
The Apollon Theatre is a theatre located in Patras. It was first completed in 1872 and was planned by the famous German architect Ernst Ziller. It is a micrograph of the La Scala in Milan and is othe oldest in the survived closed theatre of the recent years and the sensational architectural ornament of Patras.
