I got these basil seedlings and put them in a pot, since there's almost no chance of me having a real garden this summer. At least I'll have something.
Jeff & I went for brunch with Natalie and Tony at the Roundel, & I picked up this plant at the produce store. Nat decided to stick around for the taco cookoff, so we came back to the house and I encouraged her to make something— & she did! Jeff did not participate, and instead spent the afternoon restringing guitars and taking photos of them to sell.
It was one of our bigger cookoffs in awhile— 9 entries and 13 attendees! I made jalapeño & lime refried black bean tacos with salsa verde, red cabbage, cashew feta, and roasted pineapple. Natalie made beer-braised chipotle cauliflower tacos with cabbage & carrot slaw and avocado. The winner was Malloreigh with homemade vegan chorizo tacos with lime crema and seared cabbage (my personal favourite; I love chorizo). We polished off 6 bottles of wine and felt very full but not burstingly so (as can often be the case with cookoffs). It was the last one we'll host here, but as we no longer have a dishwasher, I was too busy trying to clean up to feel too sad about that. 113/365.

At first glance, this might seem like any old piece of boring, abandoned roadway, but it's really a piece of history. This is the only completely original piece of Seedling Mile on the entire Lincoln Highway. Untouched, unchanged since it was installed.
"Seedling Miles" were built at various locations along the Lincoln to demonstrate how good roads could be if local & state governments would put money into roadbuilding. It was a teaser, something to whet the appetite of a public who were clamoring for better roads.
Grand Island seems rather proud of their section of seedling mile. The chunk of old Lincoln Highway is called "Seedling Mile Rd", and there's even a "Seedling Mile Elementary School".
This abandoned section of the seedling mile sits behind Kensinger's service station.
One of my wife's seedling clematis. This plant is quite vigorous with lots of blooms. The vine has overflowed a 6' trellis and is hardy in our area showing no ill effects from -25F last winter. It blooms late spring early summer and the blooms are about 5 inches across. Take 6/2/19.

One of my wife's seedling peony. It has a nice bloom and is vigorous and hardy. The foliage is nice after it blooms out and has been dear headed.

Drosophyllum lusitanicum seedling. Barely an inch tall but already catching and presumably digesting insects. This unusual carnivorous plant hails from Portugal and parts of Spain and Morocco. Unlike most carnivorous plants that grow in swamps and bogs, Drosophyllum grows in dry, somewhat disturbed silicon, gravel or shale substrates.

This is not one of the pieces going to the San Francisco show. It just kinda got stuck here in the mix. It is available through my webstore: www.limon-art.com/shop.html. Please let me know if you are interested. Thanks!!

Got bored Sunday morning. Slapped my macro lens on my girlfriend's D40 and decided to shoot some stuff. Found this miniature tree-looking thing growing from a crack in my driveway.
I noticed my first Cactus seedling which is really really tiny (about the size of a couple grains of sand). I couldn't see it very well, so I took out my camera and shot it in macro mode.
I was surprised to see that there were spider webs around it... and what looks like an aphid!!!
Our Daily Challenge ... plant a seed.
My daughter-in-law lost her mother to cancer last year and on the day of the funeral they had a luncheon for family and friends. The children had lunch outside with my husband and I and their cousins' Grandmother under a big Poinciana tree. Someone discovered that there were seeds everywhere and they all joined in to collect them so we could plant them. The little seedling came from one of those seeds. We are going to plant it in memory of Nanna Barb when it gets a bit bigger. As you can see we still have lots of seeds to plant and raise.
River Dargle Flood Defence Scheme.
These images were taken just one week before Christmas, December 2016.
At first glance -- all activity had ceased along the Slang/Rehills section of the river bank.
In the sinking sunlight, a peaceful scene.
But Lo, the elves were about to spring into action . . . . . .
A new crew rocked up . . . to plant seedlings, shrubs etc.
A cynic might opine -- tasty nibbles for the local deer herd.
"SIR, no cynics in this here neighbourhood."
Self-evident what they were doing.
Started off with fine weather, but it deteriorated as the days passed.
They returned in the New Year 2017 to complete the planting.
