Piedras Blancas beach on Highway 1

The elephant seals have colonized several of the beaches in this area, about a 20 mile colony now exists.

A lone Fur Seal on the beach at Baily Head, Deception Island.

From afar, it looked like a rock. My friend suggested that it was a magic rock. When we got close, the magic rock grew eyes and flippers and became a baby seal.

I love the pup's adorable sleeping posture and the way the mother is just barely resting her nose on it as they snooze.

A male looking for a mate at the birthing area at Donna Nook, Lincolnshire.

Taken at Piedras Blancas. These two elephant seals were not roaring at me, but another mother with a pup just out of the frame. In fact, for the hour that I watched these, the two mothers were constantly bickering. The babies got involved when necessary.

At one point, the large male, whose tail is behind the pup, rolled over on this pup. I was so worried about it, but it got loose and the male wanderered off, tired of the squabbling, I think.

I take a very non-intrusive approach to photographing wildlife. If I am disturbing them, I leave.
