20230812_5076_R62-200 Seal at Sea
This morning I walked a couple of km north along the beach after starting at North Beach (Bowhill Road). I noticed a seal in the water about 75m out and followed it as it headed north at about human walking pace. One of the pipe outlets on the beach was emitting a stream of water (must be from road works just inland) so I took a few long exposure shots here, using my tripod and Kase Neutral Density (ND) filters. The seal never came closer and without the reach of my 150-600mm lens had to make do with the 70-200mm.

Newborn grey seal pup, only a couple of days old.
(umbilical cord intact)
Just had a couple of very enjoyable days, staying with friends on the Suffolk coast.
Right near to the end of Blakeney Point I found this adorable seal pup. Photo taken lying down with a telephoto lens to minimise any alarm to the pup. Nice to see this part of the world on BBC winterwatch.
They like to come to Howth harbour (Dublin) to get some free food :D

Allied Whale rescues stranded Marine mammals. This is a harp seal that they went to check on in the winter of 2005.. it was fine. For the last few winters there has been an unusual influx of "ice seals" (Harp and hooded seals). No one is quite sure why. I hope this one is to mature now to be one of what they call the "beaters".
Please sign the petition if you haven't so far. One thing that is important to know is that some of the seals that are now in Canada may have spent the winter down here in Maine... the ocean does not know national boundaries.
Female elephant seals bark to warn tourists to keep clear of their pups on Prion Island off South Georgia Island. The larger male asleep behind them is unconcerned.
