I ended up masking the center by adding narrow tape strips until the gaps were filled. I then went over the tape with a craft stick lightly to help burnish it down and seal up the edges as tight as possible.

Interior round 2: After adding a couple of minor interior details, I went ahead and added the embossing powder once again to the floorboards. I still need to flock a couple of spots, but once it's all painted, they probably won't be noticeable anyway.
