Santorini, classically Thera, is an island in the southern Aegean Sea, about 200 km (120 mi) southeast of Greece's mainland. It is the largest island of a small, circular archipelago, which bears the same name and is the remnant of a volcanic caldera. It forms the southernmost member of the Cyclades group of islands, with an area of approximately 73 km2 (28 sq mi) and a 2011 census population of 15,550. The municipality of Santorini includes the inhabited islands of Santorini and Therasia and the uninhabited islands of Nea Kameni, Palaia Kameni, Aspronisi, and Christiana. The total land area is 90.623 km2 (34.990 sq mi). Santorini is part of the Thira regional unit.
The island was the site of one of the largest volcanic eruptions in recorded history: the Minoan eruption (sometimes called the Thera eruption), which occurred about 3,600 years ago at the height of the Minoan civilization. The eruption left a large caldera surrounded by volcanic ash deposits hundreds of metres deep. It may have led indirectly to the collapse of the Minoan civilization on the island of Crete, 110 km (68 mi) to the south, through a gigantic tsunami. Another popular theory holds that the Thera eruption is the source of the legend of Atlantis.
It is the most active volcanic centre in the South Aegean Volcanic Arc, though what remains today is chiefly a water-filled caldera. The volcanic arc is approximately 500 km (310 mi) long and 20 to 40 km (12 to 25 mi) wide. The region first became volcanically active around 3–4 million years ago[citation needed], though volcanism on Thera began around 2 million years ago with the extrusion of dacitic lavas from vents around the Akrotiri.

Blue Oia, Santorini, Greece. Before sunrise, Oia village in blue tone is a different beauty than the way it usually looks. This series was from my freelance travel project in Greece 2016.
This is probably my favourite shot from santorini, walking up some stairs early one morning with no one else around, and found this blue done and bell tower. this was jut around the corner from where we were staying.
Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. It was devastated by a volcanic eruption in the 16th century BC, forever shaping its rugged landscape. Captivating the most inspiring sunsets in the world.
Santorini's iconic white churches feature distinctive domes and minimalistic designs, creating a striking contrast against the blue sky . The whitewashed exteriors reflect the island's traditional architecture and blend harmoniously with the picturesque surroundings, offering a timeless charm.
Santorini es, en esencia, lo que queda de una enorme explosión volcánica que destruyó los primeros asentamientos existentes, haciendo desaparecer gran parte del territorio de la antigua isla y provocando la creación de la caldera geológica actual.
Firá (Greek: Φηρά, pronounced [fiˈra], official name Φηρά - Thira) is the modern capital of the Greek Aegean island of Santorini (Thera). A traditional settlement, "Firá" derives its name from an alternative pronunciation of "Thíra", the ancient name of the island itself.
Fira is a city of whitewashed houses built on the edge of the 400 metres (1,312 feet) high caldera on the western edge of the semi-circular island of Thera. The two main museums of interest are the Archaeological Museum of Thera, 30 metres (98 feet) east of the cable car entrance, and the Museum of Prehistoric Thera at the southeast corner of the White Orthodox Cathedral of Ypapanti ([it]), built on the site of an earlier church destroyed in the 1956 Amorgos earthquake. The town also hosts a number of churches, including the Cathedral of Ypapanti and the Three Bells of Fira.

Santorini is one of the Cyclades islands in the Aegean Sea. In the interests of full disclosure, I did not take this photo, which I believe is in the public domain. If not, I will be glad to attribute it to the photographer and/or remove it. I did enhance the image with Topaz Simplify and Picasa. The problem is that this is such an iconic image, that thousands of tourists have taken similar photos from virtually the same perspective. In any event, Santorini reminds me of several of my favorite movies, including "Zorba the Greek," "Never on Sunday," and "A Man Could Get Killed." Anthony Quinn was Zorba, and Greek actress Melina Mercouri starred in the latter two movies.
An ultimate Aegean experience : hunging around in Fira-Santorini, in front of the caldera and the deep blue...

Do Birds Fly Right?
A poem by Katie Gabrielle
Do birds fly right
In an upside down world?
Are the colors just as bright
Or the smiles just as warm
Is it fun to fly upside down
In an upright world?
Ask any bird and you will hear
"Yes, I can't think straight, and
my mind is a blank. I'm poor
as a church mouse, with no
money in the bank!
But I don't cry and I don't whine
A bird flies right up
Or down side right!
If you are dizzy
Watching me fly
Just turn around
And say goodbye!"
