Both of us love markets, as these are colourful places for photography, not to mention the best possible place to taste local chow. We eventually hit Mercat de la Boqueria, a hugely popular market along the touristy La Rambla, in time for pre-lunch appetisers.

The Bacalao, or Salted Cod, is a popular protein in Iberia. It finds itself into many various forms in Iberian cooking. I couldn't resist buying 2 sticks just for a few lovely chomps. They were crunchy, flavourful, has that slightly coarse texture from meshed up cod flesh and thankfully warm (newly fried)! Fried food always taste nice!

Lunch @ "Tomatito", a new Spanish Tapas joint by the "El Willy" group.

My mate was curious what "Bacalao" is, which actually is salted cod.

The piece of cod had a lovingly firm but yielding texture but truth be told, it was the companions to the slice of salted cod that were really the jewels in this dish; without them, the Bacalao would be a wimpy bore.

The nuttiness of the toasted garlic was fragrant; and the underlying tangy sauce of red bell peppers with onions was narcotically savoury - extremely moreish.

These were unfortunately, nasty. No, not because they had turned bad or smelt bad. They were quite crunchy as well. Unfortunately, these pieces of deep fried salted cod skin were just TOO salty to be taken on their own as a snack. Salt avalanches in my mouth they were!

Salted cod (Bacalhau) is a delicacy is Brazil. I'll never forget the first time my Brazilian friends V&D had fish and chips in the UK. They couldn't believe how anyone could serve this prized fish dipped in batter and deep fried. The accompanying greasy chips didn't help matters. This is the 'cheaper' supermarket version. The good stuff I saw was a staggering R$100+ per kilo - for salted cod!
