Kicking up a spray of dirt, a massive smilodon, a mountain of fur and fangs, leaps out of the murky mists of time. With its muscular frame, razor sharp claws, and long curved teeth, this predator is a force to be reckoned with.

A saber-toothed cat stalks its prey in tall golden grass. The ferocious prehistoric predator crouches low and stares intently at the unfortunate animal that it hunts. With a snarl, it bears its teeth and readies its sabre shaped canines as it prepares to pounce.

A saber-toothed cat relaxes on a large flat stone atop a grassy rise. It's late in the day and the evening sun has lit the clouds up into a fiery set of colors.

This is the latest in my paleoart series. It depicts my favorite of the pleistoscene mammals, the smilodon. For this one, I wanted to see what it would look like with a lion-like coat. I rather liked the way he turned out.

A smilodon and a puma are locked in fierce combat. The saber-toothed cat rears up over the unfortunate puma ready to strike with its claws and long curved canines. The puma appears to have just been thrown to the grown, kicking up clouds of dust. Rolling onto its back, the smaller wildcat raises its claws trying to stave off the bulkier predator.

Though the smilodon appears to have the advantage in this particular fight, the puma (or cougar or mountain lion) as a species outlasted all sabre toothed cats which went extinct at the end of the pleistocene.

I had a request for a scene depicting an interaction between a cougar and a prehistoric cat, and I though it might be an enjoyable scene to make. I had a lot of fun trying to make this look like a pitched battle between two very dangerous beasts.

A shaggy saber-toothed cat with a coat pattern resembling that of a cloud leopard shows you his wicked teeth in profile as he looks over his shoulder while sitting in a patch of grass. It is probably not a good idea to disturb a smilodon who is resting in the grass.

I was in the mood again to make an artwork featuring the sabertooth, my favorite of the pleistoscene animals and probably still my favorite large cat.
