There were reports that the person who took this photo hopped a fence and climbed down the cliff a little ways to get a better vantage point. Don't tell Wanda!

Another grey and wet day in Brentwood, Essex.

I love this little patch of wild grasses against the lawns.

I scattered some chicory seeds here last year, but don't think they have germinated.

Walking between the retaining walls,

Montana Rail Link’s night gas local is westbound along the Flathead River west of Perma, Montana, on June 26, 2020. Recent trackwork has the train kicking up some dust out of the fresh ballast, and a new retaining wall constructed here has yet to be backfilled.

I wonder which one attracts the most attention?

Seemed to be doing good business in the rain.

Gracie Jo is on a brick retaining wall in the garden. It is an area in serious need of some weeding, but I haven't wanted to disturb Gracie Jo's secret tunnel in the patch of liriope ("monkey grass")--where she spent afternoons last summer.

Built below Queen Street in 1882, with buttresses added in 1887. The rock is Brisbane Tuff, a rock formed from volcanic ashes. This hasn't been coloured. The rock is actually all these colours. The building blocks of Brisbane's earliest buildings.

This mural depicting an oil slick on the surface of the ocean is on a bluff retaining wall below the University of California San Diego campus and also near Scripps Pier which is shared with UCSD and the Scripps Oceanographic Institute. Offshore drilling is heavily opposed here.

Parts of Milwaukee Road woodchip cars, rebuilt from old rib-sided boxcars, still lives on today—donating their car sides long ago for an unique retaining wall built alongside the St. Maries River Railroad yard at St. Maries, Idaho, as seen on September 27, 2021. St. Maries was a crew change point on the non-electrified “gap” on Milwaukee Road’s Pacific Extension main line. Since Milwaukee Road retreated out of the west in 1980, St. Maries River Railroad is apparently following Milwaukee’s old slogan of “America’s Resourceful Railroad” too. For 41 years and counting, it has operated five used locomotives bought from the Milwaukee Road!

A photo of a ceramic rabbit used as one of the many decorative garden embellishments at the Enabling Garden in Altoona, Iowa. I usually don’t photograph these, but with the early morning sunlight filtering through the flowers and highlighting the backside of the rabbit, I couldn’t resist this shot.

Repairing a crack that turned into a wide split, involved removing part of the wall and the soil behind it and then rebuilding it.

In the steep mountains and valleys of the Shikoku Range on Shikoku Island, Japan, the roads and houses lie in a narrow ribbon along the edge of the rivers that cut through the landscape. In the spring the water levels rise considerably as you can see on the retaining wall. This remote area is slowly depopulating as the people move away in search of jobs.
