Robyn Rihanna Fenty aka Rihanna performing at the 1 800 Ask Gary Amphiheater in Tampa, Florida on July 30, 2010.
19th June 2015 at The Scoop, London SE1.
Part of More London Free Festival (annual event).
Country: Britain. Style: R and B & Rock'n'Roll & Blues & Country.
Line Up: Kitty Durham (v/g/harmonica/tenor banjo), Daisy Durham (v/keyboard//tambourine/d), Lewis Durham (v/g/keyboard/d), Graeme Durham (g/tambourine/coconut), Ingrid Weiss (bass g/b) and guest: Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton (trumpet).
The three Durham siblings from Kentish Town formed this band in 2001 when Daisy and Lewis were in their early teens and Kitty younger. While sometimes described as a Rockabilly or Rock'n'Roll band, their music covers a wide spectrum of American Roots styles. As always when playing live they were joined by their father (who is Anglo-Indian from Bombay) and mother (of part Swedish descent), and (for most of the last decade) Eddie "Tan Tan" Thornton.

7th May 2011 at the Fair Grounds Race Course (Jazz & Heritage Stage), New Orleans, USA.
New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, www.nojazzfest.com/.
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.
Lineup includes: Cayetano "Tanio" Hingle (bass d), William Smith (trumpet/v), Kenny Terry (trumpet), Marlon Jordan (trumpet), Corey Henry (trombone), Reginald Stewart (trombone), Byron Bernard (tenor sax), Jeffrey Hills (sousaphone), [probably] Arian Macklin (sousaphone), Kerry "Fatman" Hunter (snare d), Louis Lederman (percussion).
If anyone can confirm whether I’ve correctly identified the lineup, I would be most grateful.
The New Birth Brass Band was formed in 1987 from musicians from the 6th and 7th Wards who had played in the Junior Olympia (Tanio Hingle - the band’s leader, Kerry Hunter, Kenny Terry) and the All Stars. Whilst open to the modern Brass Band influences of funk, hip hop, etc., it has always kept more of a traditional Brass Band sound than most of the bands which appeared then and since.
This was an expanded lineup for Jazzfest which brought together a number of former members of Rebirth (Stewart, Bernard) (plus a current one in Henry) and of the Treme (Hills, Macklin).

James Andrews is part of an extended family of musicians which includes his brother Tory (“Trombone Shorty”) and numerous cousins. The band were joined on stage by the Baby Dolls (who hare reviving a tradition dating back to the early 20th century of women masquerading as little baby girls). Wanda Rouzan is from the 7th Ward. She has been performing since childhood, initially as one of the Rouzan sisters. She has worked as a teacher and is a frequent musical theatre performer. Classic New Orleans R and B of the 1950s and 60s has been almost entirely displaced by Funk. So it’s good to hear someone who performs in a more traditional style. Wanda Rouzan also sings Traditional Jazz as well as R and B. She has preformed with Dr Michael White’s Original; Liberty Jazz Band, and with her own band.

Kirk Joseph was born in the 7th Ward and is best known as a founder member of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which rejoined in 2010. He formed Backyard Groove in 2004. Other photos I’ve taken of these musicians are of Joseph with the Forgotten Souls (2011) and the Dirty Dozen (2012); Williams with the Hot 8 (2012); Johnson with Baritone Bliss (2011; Roussel with the Dirty Dozen (2012) and Keiffer with the Mahogany (2011). Line Up: Candi Staton (v), Mick Talbot (keyboards), Mark Vandergucht (g), Ernie McKone (bass g), Crispin Taylor (d), Xavier Barnett (v), Suzie Furlonger (v).
Candi Staton from Hanceville, Alabama is best known for her wonderful 1970s albums recorded at Fame Studios. I saw her at the same venue in 2006 at one of the early appearances in her recent comeback. Then as now most of the backing musicians are from the British band Push (who also doubled as acid jazzers Galliano). Also in the band was Mick Talbot, who was part of Dexy’s Midnight Runners and the Style Council before Galliano.

Lineup: Mike Sanchez (v/p/g/percussion), Tom Bull (g), Nick Whitfield (b), Mark Morgan (d), Martin Winning (tenor sax), Pete Cook (baritone sax) and guest: Sarah Wynne (v/percussion).
Jesus Miguel “Mike” Sanchez (born in Hackney to Spanish parents) is one of the best known names on the British R and B scene - with the Big Town Playboys, Bill Wyman’s Rhythm Kings and leading his own bands. Amos Milburn and Wynonie Harris are amongst his influences. The band included his wife Sarah Wynne and the much in demand Martin Winning (who I’ve seen with Van Morrison, Nick Lowe and Geraint Watkins).

Line Up: Shuggie [Johnny Alexander II] Otis (v/g), Eric Otis (g), Michael Turre (baritone sax/flute/piccolo), Albert Quon Wing (tenor sax), Larry Douglas (trumpet), Russell "Swang" Stewart (keyboards), Lucky [Johnny III] Otis (bass g), Nick Otis (d), Jon Otis (percussion).
Shuggie Otis in the son of 1940s-70s R and B bandleader Johnny Otis (real name Ioannis Alexandres Veliotes). This father was a Greek American and his mother African American/Filipino. His nickname - a variant of Sugar - was given coined by his mother at an early age. Born in Los Angeles, CA, Shuggie performed with his father’s band from when he was 12. At 15 he made his name with the Supersession Vol II album with Al Kooper. Then in the 70s he made a series of what would much later became cult albums. Dropped by his label he disappeared from view, apart from an unsuccessful comeback in 2001 and this one, which started in 2012. Given his own start it is not surprising to find his backing band - Shuggy Otis Rite - full of relatives: two brothers (Jon and Nick), two sons (Lucky and Eric) and a cousin (Swang).

Lineup: Irma Thomas (v), Percy Williams (trumpet/congas), Emile Hall (tenor sax/tambourine), Kim Phillips (organ/p), Warner Williams (p), Arthur Bell (g), Robert Harvey (bass g), Larry Campbell (d).
Irma Thomas (Born Irma Lee) got her first break in 1959 singing with Tommy Ridgely’s band. In the 1960s he recorded songs like “It’s Rainin”, “Ruler of my Heart”, “Wish Someone would Care” and “Time is on my Side”. Following a six year break from recording she signed for Rounder, releasing her first album of the label in 1986. Two later Rounder albums were nominated for Grammys. She never mixes R and B and Gospel at the same concert. For some photos of her performing Gospel see: www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626762744030/.

Lineup: Philip Frazier (sousaphone), Glen Andrews (trumpet), Derek Shezbie (trumpet), Corey Henry (trombone), Vincent Broussard (tenor sax), Keith Frazier (bass d), Derrick Tabb (snare d).
Rebirth Brass Brand were formed in 1983 by students at the Joseph S. Clark Senior High School in Central City. They were strongly influenced by the new funkier style of Brass Band music introduced by the Dirty Dozen. Over the years there has been a high level of turnover of musicians. The only constants being the Frazier brothers, though the lineup has been stable over the last few years. A second trombone player, Stafford Agee, missed this gig.

One of two performances I attended which were part of a “Festival on the Move” stream (five performances in all over three days).
Country: United States - New Orleans. Style: New Orleans style Brass Band.
Lineup: Lumar LeBlanc (snare d), Julian Gosin (trumpet), Marcus Hubbard (trumpet), Erion Williams (tenor sax), Corey Payton (trombone), Damion Francois (sousaphone), Derrick Moss (bass d).
The Soul Rebels play in the characteristic modern New Orleans Brass Band style which combines older elements of jazz and marching band music with newer elements of R and B (funk, hip-hop, etc.). Like quite few other New Orleans Brass Bands their origins lie in the Young Olympia, mentored by Milton Batiste. The band contained founder members Lumar LeBlanc, Derrick Moss and Damion Francois (who left but was back for this tour at least). They kept to the traditional Brass Band instrumentation (no sign of a guitarist which has been part of the Soul Rebels in recent years).

This gig was part of the Dirty Dozen’s 35th anniversary tour. The band was formed when a group of young musicians, several of whom had come through the Fairview Baptist Church Marching Band and then the Hurricane and Tornado bands, linked up with Benny Jones who was part of the Social and Pleasure Club scene in Treme. They became the premier Brass Band in the city, making a number of innovations to the format: in 1994 replacing the separate Snare and Brass Drummers with someone playing a Drum Kit, later adding Keyboards or Guitar (for a while they even dropped the Brass Band part of their name). Davis, Townes, Harris and Lewis have been members for the entire journey (though Davis hasn’t toured much outside the New Orleans area in recent years). Higgins has been in the band since 1994. Kirk Joseph left in 1991 and has rejoined for the anniversary celebrations. Roussel (of the Glen David Andrews Band) is new to the Dirty Dozen (the last Keyboard player was Richard Knox). I’ve taken photos of some of these musicians with other Brass Bands - Townes and Joseph with the Forgotten Souls (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626762648868/) and Lewis with the Treme (www.flickr.com/photos/kmlivemusic/sets/72157626842194353/).

Lineup: Kirk Joseph (sousaphone), William Smith (trumpet), Efrem Towns (trumpet), Charles Joseph (trombone), Roderick Paulin (alto sax), Eric Traub (tenor sax), Keith Frazier (bass drum), Ajay Mallory (snare drum), Henry Petras (tambourine).
The Forgotten Souls Brass Band (it now seem to have been dropped the last part of the name) was formed around 2000 by Kirk Joseph. who had left the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. In just a few years it released no less than four albums (produced by Henry Petras on stage here playing tambourine). These days it only seems to come together for the French Quarter Festival and Jazzfest. This is because the membership is drawn from other brass bands and, therefore, busy elsewhere. This time the lineup consisted of Kirk’s bother Charles Joseph (ex Treme and Dirty Dozen), Efrem Towns (Dirty Dozen), William Smith (New Birth), Roderick Paulin (Paulin Brothers and ex-Rebirth), Eric Traub (sometime New Orleans Nightcrawlers), Keith Frazier (Rebirth) and Ajay Mallory (101ers and ex-Rebirth). The Forgotten Souls were joined on stage by a member of the Uptown Bone Gang, playing a similar role to a Grand Marshall. Bone Gangs are a Mardi Gras Parade formation like the Indians.
