Put the Sigma 150-600 on the 70D and went to both Wakodahatchee and Green Cay to try out the lens and get a feel for the 400-600mm shooting.

Lighting was awful as it was dusk and overcast. So these shots have a lot of ISO to compensate for the small aperture.

Autofocus was slower than I was used to, but once it was locked it stayed locked unless my handheld self moved off the subject.

Overall, my first impression is pleasing as the lens is impressive. So far, it's a keeper.

What's this?

This, in retrospect, turned out to be the very last shot I took with my beloved Pentax K-7.

After much rumination, I decided to let go of my Pentax DSLR sytem. I put almost everything I have for the system up for sale last night, and most of them are gone, including the K-7 and the legendary FA 31mm F1.8 Limited lens.

The reason is multi-layered. One was financial. I have spent less and less time on economic activities as I near the completion of my dissertation, which added to our household deficit (this hobby of mine has not had an impact, though it may be hard to believe :-).

That led me to reevaluate my arsenal, and I found that I'm spending more and more time with film and less and less with digital. To the point that it started to make little sense to own and maintain two, full-blown DSLR systems. One had to go.

Finally, when comparing my 5D Mk II to the K-7, it wasn't so much so that the 5D was a better camera than the K-7––the K-7 has its strengths, built-in IS, its compact size & weight, sensor-based composition adjust, to name but a few––as it was the fact that I *need* the 5D to mount many of my other treasures, like the four Zuiko lenses, two Nikkors, and one Nikon F mount Hartblei Superrotator.

Add to that the fullframe sensor, better high-ISO performance (which will compensate for the lack of built-in IS in many cases), and 1080P video, there was no way that I could let go of the 5D. Thus it is only with the process of elimination that I had to choose to let go of the K-7.

I have a soft spot in my heart for the Pentax DSLR system. The K200D was what got me into photography exactly two years ago. If it weren't for it, the K20D that soon replaced it, some of the first Pentax lenses I got for it like the 10-17 fisheye and the FA31, and the various M42 lenses I got to mount on it, I don't think I would've gotten *so* into photography. The Pentax DSLR system taught me the joy and creativity of the photographic process.

I am by no means becoming a Canon fanboy (lol). To this day, I've never bought a single Canon lens (not to mention an L lens), and I have no immediate plans to do so––not until I can afford that TS-E 17mm F4L :-D. And I am by no means quit being a Pentaxian. I have my 67II (currently in repair), and I just picked up a P645 for a song. I don't think I'll come back to Pentax digital––at least, not their APS-C system.

If Pentax releases an FF flagship, which I highly doubt, I might have to reconsider (though having let go of the FA31 is gonna hurt). If they release a mirrorless body, following micro-4/3, Sony NEX, and the rumored Nikon EVIL camera, then I will definitely consider, depending on the flange focal distance and sensor size, of course. But the most likely scenario is that a few years down the line, when I can afford it, I would make the 645D (or 645DII) my first digital medium format camera.

So, until then, So long, and thanks for all the bokeh.

All summer, Greenpeace is at festivals around the country asking you to put yourself in the picture - deforestation isn't pretty and we all need to take a stand to prevent it.

This is a large push to help remind our class of 1975 that we have a re-union in October. I never took down Halloween in my garage from last year because my brain is going ….WHY. Time goes by so fast anymore. By the time I put it away I’ll have to put it back out. It took me until it got warm to take down Christmas lights. So if you are even a little bit like me, you know it is almost October and time for our reunion. This is just something I can do to help promote the event. Teresa Fite Goodale is heading the event up. If you ever want to be taken for granted try to run an event! Sometimes people think invites are supposed to show up out of nowhere like a person in charge of them somewhere is watching them move from house to house their entire lives. If they don’t get an invite I have heard people actually complain. I would have come but why didn’t I get an invite. Well, we get older. People drop off the face of the earth with old mailing lists in their secret bag. You have basically never told anyone that was on the Student Council your new address. You really want privacy but want to be invited to things. Or you aren’t on facebook. There is no rule that says everyone has to Facebook. Face it some of us can’t stand each other but most of us try! Especially our class of 1975! You don’t have to sit with anyone you don’t like. You have to share this information because I have blocked some people and know we are not all on the same friend’s list. Then they have to be contacted old school, pot luck style. So those of us on Facebook can't take for granted what I have found out doing our photos. Probably %50 of us are still not computer oriented. Some don’t even have computers. Lots of those that do have computers hate emails and Facebook. So get out the word any way you can and rattle some cages. Send Teresa any updates you have for yourself and others, because it’s all HER fault if you don’t get invited!

I have another push. Curt Fowler and I have a cool Photo Group we call South Rowan Photo Group. www.facebook.com/groups/srphotogroup/

You don’t have to be from The South Rowan area. We concentrate on Photography and Video. We would like for you to join the group especially if you are taking a lot of photos. Lots of you have cool interesting lives and we want to see how others live. It is also nice to go to one place and see photos of beautiful people and places in one place without having to surf 1,000 profiles. Sometimes one of us may give a critique of a very sentimental photo only because many of us have spent thousands of dollars and many years of our lives in the Dark Room and learning the new Digital techniques. Many of us need photo advice, especially me! None of us know everything about this new technology but I have invited members that are really close to it and are kind enough to offer help. You don’t have to be a pro. We just ask you participate. We have 200 members and out of that 30 of us consistently like to see articles and view each other’s work. I’d like to increase the shares. That means sometimes in your computer world you take an extra step and share your photo to our group. www.facebook.com/groups/srphotogroup/

I am getting ready to get busy with some travel and am getting spread a little thin. So I need a little help. Our group has many seasoned professionals from all over the world that have published books, make a full-time living with photography and a part-time living. Some are in The Broadcast news business. We have award winners and we have people connected to the movie world. The I-Phone photos are getting good enough that many of us can’t tell the difference from what camera took the photo. Many of our seasoned photographers love to use their phone cameras. Here is the link. It may take us a few days to get to the invite because I also scan the group for spammers. Thanks, Shane www.facebook.com/groups/srphotogroup/

Put it all together and I think it is the best set-up I have ever done. After playing for a day or two I will do some beauty shots. Love the look of this instrument.

To put traveling on the Beartooth highway into words is difficult for me but I will give it a try anyway. Honestly I think it's something every single person should do at least once in their life. The views are simply beyond imagination! The higher you travel the better it gets. If you can drive this highway, DO IT. That's the best I can do :)
