The moon rises over the Soo Line east of Argonne where a pump house still stands along the right-of-way on the railroad's mainline from Minneapolis to Sault Ste. Marie. The tracks here are idle and have not been used for years, unfortunately, under CN ownership. Meanwhile, this Soo Line relic has lasted providing direct Soo Line evidence.
This photo was over a year in the making. I zipped past Argonne in November 2018 and spotted the structure in the trees but simply kept driving towards the former Nicollet Badger Northern locomotive sitting at NBNR Junction east of here. Over the year, I really had wished I would have stopped at grabbed a shot. I am glad I waited as this scene was just too good - a 30 second exposure showing layers of clouds roll in front of the moon.
Horsey Winpump
The present structure was built in 1912 on the foundations of the 18th-century Horsey Black Mill.
The windpump was working until it was struck by lightning in 1943. It was acquired by the National Trust in 1948 from the Buxton Family and has been restored. The mill's damaged sails were removed in 1956, and replacement sails and fantail were installed in 1962. The Great Storm of 1987 caused further damage, and repair works were required before the building could reopen to visitors in 1990.
The Buxton family continue to manage the Horsey estate, emphasising nature conservation. Because of this, the estate has become an internationally important wildlife site.
The Windpump has recently succumbed to the ravages of time and the elements and the sails were removed again in 2014.
They must have been repaired again as they are on the wind pump if not working.

Turning the crank moved a chain with little buckets attached down into water in a cistern or well and back up to the spout. GEM is another brand--new Cincinnati GEM hand pumps are available from Lehman's (the current manufacturer) and Walmart.
These days, water pumps like this one are rare and ones that still work even more so. I remember using one as a child! It certainly makes me very grateful to have hot & cold running water in my house!
This pump was set on an old well circa 1800 and was until 1926 the only public water supply for this part of Bearsted in Kent

We went just down the road, to Papplewick Pumping Station, yesterday. "In Steam" and featuring an Artisan Craft Fair. I paid the extra four quid to go and have a look around the underground reservoir. Very interesting indeed, but the combination of pitch darkness, bright spotlights, thirty-ish bodies, and only a phone-cam meant a slightly less-than-ideal photo opportunity. Nevertheless....
Pudding Mill Lane Pumping Station pumps sewage from the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park into the main sewer system.
Some of the exterior panels are etched with images of technical drawings by engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette for London's original 1860s sewerage system.
Designed by John Lyall Architects and completed in 2010.

Henry Curry built the Grade II-listed Pump Room for the 7th Duke of Devonshire in 1894 due to overcrowding at the previous well in the Natural Baths. It was last used to “take the waters” in the 1970s.
The building has been restored as part of the Crescent renovation and is now managed by the Buxton Crescent Heritage Trust and operates as a Visitor Centre.
