The view is looking south-west just prior to sunset into Governors Bay (with the long jetty) and Teddington at the head of Lyttelton Harbour/Whakaraupo (partly obscured). The harbour itself is the remains of an extinct volcano and not only includes the Port of Lyttelton, but is also the gateway to the playground that is Banks Peninsula. The peninsula is littered with bays of every kind facing almost every direction. Swimming bays, surf bays and fishing bays. There is something for everyone and these bays are the getaway for many Christchurch people summer or winter while there are walkways, a few huts and plenty of tramps or day walks with stunning views to boot.
I don't normally include human subjects in my panoramas, but sometimes you don't have any choice! What was both interesting and amusing about this image is they they two young men were saluting the view and the sunset in the soft evening light, while the young woman only had eyes for her man...

Many people have told me told me to crop the image so the kids on the right are not there, but I feel that is what adds so much to this photo. I named it Priorities vs. Distractions because in this shot and in my life God is the priority over all other things and this photo captures a lot of what my heart feels. I could many times be out having a blast and hanging (which I love and do quite often) but I never want that to be my priority and take the place of God in my life. He is first. I just love this shot a ton and thank you to all who look at it and comment.

"Barbie Doll Around the World" is a book that I have seen time and time again on my quest to add more guides to my growing collection. As it covers foreign exclusives (ones sold outside the U.S. for clarification), I didn't think it was a priority to purchase. But over the years I have amassed several dolls that came from out of the country. It proved to be tricky to identify some of them, especially given that certain countries do not provide box dates on their packages. This book doesn't seem particularly difficult to come by. I was able to purchase it for an affordable price off eBay the day I decided I wanted it. I love that it is hard cover, since soft cover books tend to get beaten up easier, especially the more you use them.
Let's start with the actual content of the book. The countries/locations that Augustyniak features in this guide are: Australia, Canada, Europe, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Peru, and Venezuela. Although I'm not familiar with every country in the world that has released some version of Barbie, this group seems pretty vast (according to the introduction, Barbie is sold in over 140 countries world wide). Obviously there are more dolls for some sections than others, based on how popular Barbie was. It's hard to say whether or not Augustyniak favored a particular country's dolls when I have no way of knowing how complete/incomplete a section is. I can say that this book isn't fully comprehensive. This means if you suspect your doll is from out of the U.S. and you don't find her in this book, that doesn't mean she isn't actually a foreign exclusive. I purchased this guide mostly on the premise that I had two India Barbies. I wanted to know more information about them, which is what prompted the purchase of this book. Interestingly, one of my dolls was not included, despite being released in 2000. This book is supposed to cover from 1964 to 2007. Which in terms of a doll book, this one is far more up to date than most out there. Many collector guides stop in the mid 1990s. I've always appreciated that Augustyniak continued to write Barbie books up until he passed away. I'm assuming that he simply missed certain dolls or couldn't find photos of them to include for this book. Sometimes just having an idea of how foreign dolls are labeled can help you identify them using the internet, so this book would be handy as a starting point.
Speaking of which, over the years Augustyniak included several of these dolls in other books he wrote. This fact alone helped me become familiar with makes such as Takara, the Japanese version of Barbie. As I mentioned above, simply knowing a small shred of information can give you a starting point. If you have no idea where to begin, that can complicate the identification process. The India Barbie I own that was featured in this book had some useful information. I was able to learn what other dolls were in her line. At the beginning of the book, there is a section breaking down all the countries. In each paragraph, Augustyniak gives you some history behind these foreign dolls, and any special facts that are interesting or provide some sort of context. There is also a family tree at the start of the book, which includes characters not produced here in the United States. For instance, Kelly's friend Melody in the U.S. is known as Susie in other parts of the world. And Kelly herself is called Shelly! Some of these names I have encountered many times over the years, but there are some friends that I previously never heard of (like Barbie's friend Tara Lynn being called Tina).
This book seems to flow mostly in alphabetical order. However things get a tad messy at the back section. For whatever reason, Augustyniak tossed Mexico, Argentina, and Brazil out of order. I find that a tad frustrating as someone who values organization. Each country is also not necessarily organized in chronological order. Certain ones do indeed seem to start with the oldest dolls and end with the newest. But the India section for instance jumps around. This can make identification tricky because sometimes you know a doll has to be newer or older based on particular features (like a body dated 2000 can only have been produced from 2000 onward). So you HAVE to flip through all the pages in a section just to make sure you don't overlook one that is out of place. Generally speaking, there seems to be a boxed photo and facial closeup of each doll. This is very useful since some of these Barbies are very difficult to track down additional photos of online. However, there are plenty of dolls who do not have a facial closeup. The quality of the photos is decent as well. While there are quite a few placed on each page, the dolls are not crammed/overcrowded. The facial closeups are cropped in a way where you can see the important features, and not excess parts like hair style. Augustyniak even provided a few comparison photos of U.S. counterparts so the reader could see how they differed.
Some dolls have a few sentences as a description. Others simply have a stock number and year. For the most part the descriptions are somewhat useless--the author simply describes the outfit (which you can see for yourself). Although sometimes there are nuggets of useful information. I find it handy when he mentions which accessories are included (as you can't make out much detail in a photo), and when he describes packaging changes that can help you better pin point a doll's release. Speaking of years, as always Augustyniak uses release date, not box date. I myself prefer box dates because release dates can vary so widely depending on the area a doll was sold. But at least it gives a context of roughly when the doll was available. Barbie is not the only doll included in this guide. Augustyniak also includes her family and friends, as well as certain playsets and fashions. There are also celebrity dolls and the Heart Family produced by Mattel as well. The celebrities and Heart Family are sort of wasteful to include as many were featured in his "Thirty Years of Mattel Fashion Dolls" book. However, I'll give Augustyniak a pass since his previous book came out in the late 90s, so there are newer dolls that weren't featured in it. One thing I found odd while looking through this book was that there were some dolls that were called "foreign exclusives," but they were in fact released here in the U.S., like Baywatch Teresa. These dolls weren't only available at some stores either--they were widely sold. So I am a bit perplexed as to why they are featured in this book, as that could confuse someone who was less informed into believing that their run of the mill Baywatch Teresa was exotic. Not only that, but Augustyniak's descriptions beneath these dolls provide no context to why they were included.
Although this book has some areas that could use improvement, overall it's a fabulous buy. There really isn't even another one on the market that can compete. This book showcases dolls sold outside the U.S., whereas most Barbie exclusives guides cover those sold within the country. It also features all the way up until 2007, which is a rarity in the doll book sphere. The photos are pleasant to look at and can be used for identification. Even though I don't encounter say India Barbies on a regular basis, I do find Canadian/European ones occasionally. It's not all that uncommon for such dolls to end up here in the U.S. I've also found I've already reached for this book to help other collectors identify their foreign dolls. There are so many collectors from all around the world, not just ones in the U.S. So for them, standard Barbie books do not showcase the dolls that were part of their childhood, or sold in their country. All in all, I recommend this book--even if you don't collect foreign dolls, it's a compelling read!
