Pratapgad. Probably one would remember the place for the famous battle between Chatrapati Shivaji and Afzal Khan. Shivaji downed the latter using the famous "Bagh Nakhi" or "Tiger Claws" in a one-on-one fight. The marathi phrase "Hota Jiva Mhanun Vachala Shiva" or "As there was Jiva, so lived Shiva", was derived from here, after Jiva Mahal saved Shivaji from Afzal Khan's guard. Pratapgad (also spelt as Pratapgarh, Pratapgadh)is a massive fort located in the Sahyadri mountain range of western Maharashtra, India, 25 kilometres from Mahabaleshwar. This fort stands 900 metres above sea level. Shivaji commissioned Moropant Trimbak Pingle, who completed the construction of this fort in 1656 AD.
The fort holds a temple dedicated to Shivaji's chosen deity Bhavani.
