The Battle of Wireless Ridge, in the centre right foreground, was an engagement of the Falklands War which took place on the night from 13 to 14 June 1982, between British and Argentine forces during the advance towards the Argentine-occupied capital of the Falkland Islands, Port Stanley.

Wireless Ridge was one of seven strategic hills within five miles of Stanley at 51°40′14″S 57°55′55″W that had to be taken in order for the Island's capital to be approached. The attack was successful, and the entire Argentine force on the Islands surrendered later that day.

This shot was taken from Mt Longdon, looking back towards Wireless Ridge, centre right and Port Stanley in the distance on the right.

The first engagement occurred during the night of the 29–30 May 1982 when the 3rd Assault Section of 602 Commando Company, led by Captain Andrés Ferrero, ran into Air Troop from D Squadron, 22nd SAS, on the slopes of Mount Kent, sustaining one casualty (First-Sergeant Raimundo Viltes), abandoning much of its equipment to the anger of Major Aldo Rico, their Commanding Officer. The SAS sustained two wounded during the contact.

SAS patrols from Air and Boat Troop squadrons and Major Delves' tactical headquarters (THQ) fought a number of actions with the Argentine Special Forces before the Argentines were forced to withdraw. The SAS's Air Troop patrol was at first driven but managed to hold onto the summit of Mount Kent until Royal Marine reinforcements arrived.

Have a safe and beautiful day dear Flickr friends !

Under the pink hues of the pre-dawn sky, ice formations surround the light standards along the Port Stanley pier. These formations were created during a recent blizzard over the Christmas weekend that brought a flash freeze along with near hurricane strengh winds.

Unfortunately with milder temps forecasted for the next few days, these lake monsters will return back to the waters they came from.

Thanks for viewing and hope you are all having an enjoyable holiday season :)

Located on the Stanley by-pass road, en route to Surf Bay, east of the town, the Signpost or Totem Pole is a quirky structure signposting distances to various places in the world. Reminiscent of the Lands End and John O'Groats signs in the UK, it was originally created by military personnel as a touch of home. Since then additional signs have been added by many visitors from across the globe. Most are villages, towns and cities in the UK at roughly 8,000 miles away but locations in the American continent can also be found, along with Europe and even Russia.

Port Stanley Breakwater Lighthouse

Port Stanley

The Port Stanley Breakwater Lighthouse was designated a heritage lighthouse in 2016 under the Heritage Lighthouse Protection Act. The lighthouse is an iconic structure in the Port Stanley community, and represents the close economic ties we have to Lake Erie. It has served mariners in the region for over a century.

Brought forward ... The horizon line has long fascinated me as a photographic subject. See first comment box for just a few other photos ...

Telegraph House

205 Main Street

The Payne House was built in 1873 by Manuel Payne on the site of Col. John Bostwick's residence, and encompasses its original foundation. Built of yellow brick in the early Victorian style, it mixes the gables of Gothic Revival and the bay windows and quoining of the Italianate style. Manual Payne was a railway agent, telegraph and telephone operator, customs officer, express agent, issuer of marriage licenses, and the first postmaster of the village.

The view from Wireless Ridge to Mt Longdon and Mt Kent on East Falkland, Falkland Islands.

With the cold arctic temperatures settling in, ice formations are growing along the shores of Lake Erie. Still, there was still enough open water left to provide some beautiful reflection of the pastel coloured skies created by this late January sunset!

It’s been a dry fall here so fungi have been hard to find. I came across these 2 in the woods the day after we had some rain. Looks like they had just come out.

Lady Elizabeth is a wrecked iron barque of 1,155 tons built by Robert Thompson Jr. of Southwick, Sunderland and launched on 4 June 1879.

On 4 December 1912, Lady Elizabeth left Vancouver bound for Delagoa Bay Mozambique, with a shipment of lumber. The ship encountered severe weather halfway through the voyage and was damaged just off Cape Horn. Captain Hoegh ordered the ship to the nearest port for repairs. Lady Elizabeth altered course for Stanley, Falkland Islands. 15 miles (24 km) north of Port Stanley, Lady Elizabeth struck Uraine Rock just off Volunteer Point and suffered a 6-foot (1.8 m) break in the hull and keel along with a 1-foot (30 cm) hole. The ship began to sink but was able to get to Port Stanley for repairs.

In June 1913, she was condemned and converted into a coal hulk. In June 1913, she was condemned and converted into a coal hulk. On 17 February 1936 her mooring lines broke during a storm and she drifted to where she now lies in Whalebone Cove in Stanley Harbour.

Lady Elizabeth is still intact and partially beached in Whalebone Cove. The ship has been reported to rock back and forth during high tides from the pounding waves.

Livery Stables

215 Main Street, Port Stanley

This whimsical building may be the oldest structure in the village, and has been a livery, a confectionary shop, a retail store, and temporarily the Village Hall. Its large display windows in the front, distinctive features, and main location has always kept the Livery Stable at the hub of village life.

This long pier jetting out into Lake Erie at Port Stanley Ontario is a perfect haven for hundreds of Cormorants. They can easily catch their meals and have a place to rest and dry out their wings. Fabulous too is the sun rays penetrating through the clouded skies !

Harbour House

194 Main Street, Port Stanley

The building was constructed circa 1917 by the East Side Fish Company, although it was not completed until after the fishing industry began to decline. It was never used as a fishery but served for net mending and storage. The symmetrical design and the number of windows provide east, south and west exposure to both natural light and the sun's heat in a large structure that was originally heated only by small coal stoves.

Russel House

211 Main Street, Port Stanley

The Russell house was built in the early 1870s of locally made strawberry bricks by a newly arrived settler, John Sweeney. It was one of the first hotels in Port Stanley, and one of a number of similar inns required in the early days of lake, rail and stagecoach travel. Over the years it has served as butcher and plumbing shops, and doctor's, lawyer's and insurance agent's offices. The building later became the Sterling Bank, and several staff members lived in rooms on the second floor. One of these staff included a young banker named Mitchell Hepburn, who later became Premier of Ontario.

Excerpt from portstanleyheritage.com/open6.htm:

St. John's Presbyterian Church in Port Stanley, constructed in 1852, is a wonderful example of small-town ecclesiastical architecture. Nestled among the trees in the heart of the village, this building has, for over 150 years, catered to the religious needs of the community.

Every Spring the little church is packed to the doors for the special Blessing of the Nets service which starts the fishing season for the many commercial fish tugs which still operate from the harbour. Members of the church will be on hand to explain this ceremony and show you around the church. If you are here at lunch time you can purchase a bowl of Presbyterian soup and some old-fashioned church sandwiches.

Shortly after the break of dawn a fishing vessel, named the Andrea Marie, heads out from the harbour at Port Stanley into the waters of Lake Erie. There was a lot of light refraction coming off the water in this shot which at first I was disappointed by, but I actually have come to like the uniqueness it adds to the shot.

Thanks for viewing and Happy Thanksgiving to all the Canadians out there :)
