This is an image from my first and only attempt (I kept meaning to redo it, but this was squeezed in between 2 week-long business trips...and my wife was kind enough to be my muse *once* for this project...didn't want to push it).
I looked around the house shortly after reading the assignment/exercise and quickly realized that there were far too many off-white (or light), matte surfaces in my house, and far too few dark shiny surfaces. After throwing myself upon the couch in frustration it hit me--the couch is made of somewhat shiny dark leather!
After convincing her to sit in front of the couch, I played around with the umbrella for nearly 20-30 minutes before I got shots that worked for me. This was among my favorite shots, but I chose another, more closely-cropped shot as my final.
Strobist info: SB-800 (triggered with SC-19 off-camera cord) at ~1/4 power (hey, it was late!), bounced into white Wescott umbrella. Apex of umbrella was about 3-4 feet away from subject (to camera right), who was about 1.5 feet away from back of couch. camera was about 3-4 feet away from umbrella to the opposite side.
got2b glued works excellent for styles that you do not want to come out or move.
The area with the gel is very hard, and wont fall out of position.
I was able to make her pigtail with just gel and twirling the hair around with my fingers.
I've written the pattern for this, it is in my blog.
