Morning spent with a friend of mine, hanging out and shooting around Los Angeles’ Pico-Union district. I wanted to try out my 100-200mm telephoto lens and to mess a little with some straight out of camera recipes for the camera.

They said to the woman, “We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.”

(Wikipedia)

This is the extinct volcano of Pico on the island of the same name in the Azores. At around 6,000 feet, it's the highest point in the Azores and, indeed, in the whole of Portugal.

Snapped from a TAP Portugal (Portuguese national airline) airliner about 10 minutes out from the airport at Horta on the neighbouring island of Faial bound for Lisbon.

Photos never quite do justice, but we took off from Horta on a rather grey day, then emerged out the top of the clouds into the sunshine to find this dirty great mountain going past the window!

Destruction of near-horizontal basaltic lava flows along vertical joints. High inaccessible cliffs form where present sea level is considerably lower than the surface of the youngest lava flows. These conditions provided for only few favourable port sites and therefore precluded any denser settlement pattern. High relief coast lines also mitigated tourist related pressure upon the original environment.

On the horizon the two rocky islands of Ilheu Deitado ("lying down") and Ilheu Em-Pe ("standing up"). They are the last eroded remnants of an original secondary volcanic center W of Madalena, in the shallow strait between Pico and Faial Islands.

Home Junction, where 3 rail lines met at Exposition and Pico. This was part of the Santa Monica "Air Line," Looking south on gateway blvd, a streetcar line once took passengers from here to Pacific Ocean Park and the pier there.

Tres Picos trail

Madeira, PT

My daughter and I took a tour through the central and eastern parts of Madeira. The first stopping place was Pico do Arieiro, Madeira's third highest peak at an altitude of 1810m.

Views over the mountains were pretty spectacular - and I enjoyed being in clear sunshine above the clouds.

The new Pico/Rimpau bus terminal – a Metro Connections facility prototype – includes a number of amenities for patrons and bus operators. It will be integrated into a retail development scheduled to open in mid-2007.

Standing ilheu and lying down illheu (the name of these rocks), boat trip from Horta (Faial island) to Madalena (Pico island).

A small port on the SE corner of Pico island, which was once the center of the islands whaling industry.

Position: 38°23.9N,28°15.4W.

Clearance:

This is not a port of entry.

Docking:

Entrance into the main harbour is clear if you stay close to the green light of the jetty. Once in the main harbour, there are dangerous patches of rocks almost everywhere and it is shallow. Care should be taken.

There is a very small marina here, the first pontoon is the only one available for sailboats: just 5 places. Or you can stay at the welcome pontoon just after the dock.

Cruisers have reported that this marina is so small nobody is dedicated to the VHF. However, it is likely someone will be waiting on the dock to assist with paperwork.

On my solo road trip across Northern Spain, I stopped by the town of Potes and took a one-day foggy mountain hike in the Picos de Europa mountains.
