Morning spent with a friend of mine, hanging out and shooting around Los Angeles’ Pico-Union district. I wanted to try out my 100-200mm telephoto lens and to mess a little with some straight out of camera recipes for the camera.
A picture from this morning of the Picos de Europa mountains, as seen from Mogrovejo, Liébana, Cantabria, Spain. I drove several kilometers around different locations, but a totally cloudy sky kept me searching for a nice place for sunrise. I didn't find this place until later, but the moving clouds gave me a blue sky and the view of the mountains from here was stunning!

Pico das Torres (Tower's Peak) is the second highest peak on the island of Madeira. It lies roughly midway between the Pico Ruivo (Redhead Peak) and Pico do Arieiro at an altitude of 1,853 meters (6,079 ft) and is only accessible from the trail between these two peaks.
You can see the trail in the photo, it's roughly at the "1/3 horizontal line" at the bottom at the picture. I highly recommend that trail because of the amazing landscape. But you have to be fit and not scared of heights. There is also a narrow and quite long tunnel beneath this mountain, get prepared with a flash-light.
Photo taken at sunrise at the Miradouro do Ninho da Manta, where supposedly the Buzzard raptor nests. It is a 25 minutes walk on the trail after Pico do Arieiro.

Aun en el invierno, el Pico Picapinos escoge una rama seca o un tronco hueco sin corteza y, bien apoyado en sus tarsos, lo martillea vigorosamente con golpes rápidos y rítmicos, en series de doce, que hacen resonar la madera de una forma extraña. Otros prefieren objetos metálicos para esta manifestación sonora.
Este pico excava él mismo su nido, pero utiliza a veces una cavidad ya existente, el agujero viejo de otro pico o caja anidera. Tras la época de la cría los Picos Picapinos se dispersan.
El Pico Picapinos habita zonas arboladas de muy diversos tipos, tanto de frondosas como de coníferas, incluso en la alta montaña. Come en los árboles con más frecuencia que el Pito Real, que prefiere hacerlo en tierra. Debido a esta alimentación, y aunque en España es ave principalmente sedentaria, en el norte de su área de cría se comporta como típica ave irruptora, y así, en los inviernos crudos, en los que falta totalmente el alimento en esas zonas, se producen desplazamientos masivos, que pueden afectar a miles de aves que invaden regiones más meridionales.
Identificación: Negro con parches y manchas blancas; el macho tiene carmesí en la cabeza; los jóvenes, píleo [Parte superior de la cabeza (Capirote).] rojo; ambos sexos y en todas las edades tienen rojo debajo de la cola; fácilmente diferenciable del Pico Menor por su tamaño más grande.
Nidificación: Ambos sexos excavan agujero en árbol, generalmente a 3 ó 4 metros de altura; nido sin material, excepto pocas virutas; a veces usan cajas anideras; pone, de mayo a junio, de 4 a 7 huevos blanco lustroso; la incubación, que dura unos 16 días, la realiza principalmente la hembra; los pollos, alimentados por ambos padres, abandonan el nido sobre los 20 días.
Alimentación: Larvas de escarabajos, avispas y polillas; algunas arañas; ocasionalmente pollos de aves robados de los nidos; pequeña dieta vegetal.
Hábitat: Bosques.

Este es el escenario que me encontré este lunes en la cumbre del Pico de Urbión (2228m.), todo pintado de blanco.
Y este sábado día 20, el Club de Montaña Urbión, de Duruelo de la Sierra, tenemos planeado como todos los años subir a colocar el Belén de Navidad,

Quando estamos no Pico e olhamos o cume da montanha, não é preciso sentir nada, nem assumir ou invocar o que do Pico sabíamos antes de aqui virmos para o conhecer melhor. Bastará ver e escutar, e depois expormo-nos à razão sentimental das nossas paixões. Tudo o que há a escrever sobre o Pico está nele patente e dito por escrito; paira no ar como algo que falta captar e que nunca ninguém há-de dizer ou escrever: uma intimidade exposta, uma evidência oculta que nem os estranhos nem os seus naturais conseguem revelar.

Le mont Pico (2 351 m,) est le plus haut sommet des Acores ... et donc du Portugal ... il est soit invisible à cause de la brume, soit omniprésent dans le paysage.... cela peut changer d'une minute à l'autre .... on l'approche... on l'escalade .... en quelques kilomètres on passe du niveau de la mer et d'une ambiance tropicale à celle du Jura ou des préalpes suisse .... des vaches qui semblent suspendues au dessus des nuages, et des routes qui vont vers le ciel
