Je mets un point final à cette série sur les pêcheurs de Manakara avec une photo moins « ethnologique ». Une simple photo de pêcheur à la ligne. Au début, j’ai pris cet homme pour un pêcheur du dimanche. Je me suis approché pour lui demander ce qu’il pêchait : « j’aimerais bien capturer une carangue, mais hier j’ai pêché un barracuda de plusieurs kilos », indique-t-il avec une pointe de fierté dans le regard. Finalement cet homme est un pêcheur professionnel qui gagne sa vie en vendant ses poissons aux restaurants. J’aurais dû m’en douter en voyant son matériel de pêche en fibre de verre qui ici, coûte une petite fortune.
Les pêcheurs à la ligne que j’ai pu croiser jusqu’ici, pêchaient avec un bout de bois auquel était accroché un fil et éventuellement un morceau de polystyrène en guise de flotteur. Souvent, l’hameçon n’était qu’un bout de fil de fer recourbé ou une épingle à nourrice pour les mieux équipés.
En poursuivant la conversation le pêcheur à la ligne m’a confié que son père pêchaient en mer en pirogue. Un jour il n’est pas rentré. Il s’est juré de ne plus jamais pêcher en pirogue. Il poursuit la tradition familiale, mais à la ligne. C’est moins dangereux.
Angler
I put an end to this series on the fishermen of Manakara with a photo a little less "ethnological". A simple picture of an angler. At first, I took this man for a Sunday fisherman. I approached to ask him what he was fishing? "I would like to catch a trevally, but yesterday I caught a barracuda weighing several kilos," he says with a hint of pride in his eyes.
this man is ultimately a professional fisherman who makes a living selling his fish to restaurants. I should have guessed when I saw his fishing gear, which costs a small fortune here.
So far, the anglers I have come across have fished with a piece of wood to which was attached a line and possibly a piece of polystyrene as a float. Often the hook was only a curved piece of wire or a safety needle for the best equipped.
Continuing the conversation, the angler told me that his father fished at sea in a canoe. One day he didn't come home. He swore to himself never to fish in a canoe again. He continues the family tradition, but with fishing rods. It's less dangerous.
