I finished this up last night and this morning. I am really pleased at how it came out and that I didn't overwork it, yeah!

I think I am beginning to get the hang of shadows. This has such a different feel from the tonal painting I did earlier this past week.

I am going to studying this for a while as I have a third version drawn up. I am using Hot Press paper for this next one so I am trying to use that to my advantage... if I can figure out what that might be... LOL:)

I'm very unhappy with this as I've had to overwork it to get any saturation and depth of color. I'm having a terrible time getting the values and colors that I want with the wc pencils. I usually work in watercolor or regular color pencils and I'm finding this a totally new learning experience. This is on Bockingford cp 140 in a light blue-gray.

Well, I am now ready to say this. It is really more for me to help process this, but my good friend, Rob, has passed away. I met him when he was the building engineer for the school of which I eventually became the principal. He and I seemingly could not have been more different except for our love of music, especially live music. I cannot tell you how many shows we saw and the fun we had. Through these times we got to know each other very well. It turns out that we were not that different. He wouldn't have admitted it, but he had a very kind soul albeit fractured. He had some rough times, but with the support of friends he overcame most of his major problems. He definitely was a survivor.

However, his health had taken a turn for the worse some years ago. He eventually had to retire from work. After this I didn't get to see him very much. In retrospect this saddens me greatly. I wish I had had more time. We did keep in touch on a regular basis. In fact, I was just talking to him the Saturday before last just as he was going to have quadruple bypass surgery. He had already been in the hospital months before this with a heart issue. When I visited with him then he said he was going to make changes. He did make changes but it seems the damage was already done.

The bypass surgery did not go well. His heart was simply not strong enough. He was placed in an induced coma and transferred to a hospital in Plano Tx from Arlington Tx that could better deal with his condition. He was in ICU a week or week and a half, but I could be mistaken. He never regained consciousness. He left us on 22 November around noon.

I am doing fine. It hurts knowing that I will not see him again or hear his voice. The only tough times are when I remember a concert or a funny comment he made either at work or at show.

One of the funnier times we had was when we attended a Machine Head concert. I was waiting in line. I had bought the tickets. The line was to meet the members of the band. Some roadies were nearby pushing large amps and monitors into the venue. Rob, looking like the ragged, disheveled, overworked laborer that he was, started helping the roadies with the equipment. He walked right into the venue. He didn't show a ticket or any sort of pass to allow him in. Everyone thought he was a roadie. He was waiting for me by the stage when I entered. I told him he owed me money for the ticket he didn't use! :) He bought drinks instead. You can see a pic of him meeting Machine Head in one of the uploaded pics. I met them as well obviously, but Rob couldn't operate my camera. My shots with the band came out blurry. I slapped him upside his bald head for that. We frequently punched each other. I think it stemmed from our time in the circle pits getting pushed around while the younger kids went nuts during the show. He loved to give me kidney punches which I returned as either a hit on his head or hard fist to chest punch. He would just laugh like that was the funniest thing in the world. He also would yell that I was the coolest boss and principal in the world when we met people. I was neither.

The same venue where he just walked in also got to know us so well that on two different occasions, they upgraded our tickets to VIP even though we only paid for a general admission ticket. This venue was the large Gas Monkey Live. It was owned by Richard Rawlings. We met him too when Rob and I saw Dwight Yoakam there. Gas Monkey didn't survive covid, and the smaller Gas Monkey Bar & Grill went into litigation with Rawlings over who knows what. It closed as well this year if I am not mistaken.

Here are some pictures of our fun at shows. These are all just quick snapshots with an iPhone...in other words, they are not great shots, but I like them. If anybody has better pics of him please send them to me. Many knew Rob much longer than I, but in the time I had with him, we had some fun!

Rob, you insufferable pain in the arse, I am going to miss you horribly. Good-bye and may you rest in peace.

----------------

for sketchbook skool-continuous line selfie homework:I've tried this a few times- It is a challenge for me to work slowly- I like this one even though I think I only worked on it for about ten minutes- the fountain pen started to leak darker as I paused so I tried to stay in the momentum of my line and my concentration on the mirror- the drawing of the hand got a little lost, but when I came back around to it as I worked through the face- I didn't want to overwork or fix it- so I guess you can imagine the rest of the hand

Last night I sort of went nuts.

I decided to make channa masala for dinner. And pumpkin chocolate bars for work. And a pie. A pumpkin apple pie. For no reason at all. The channa masala and pumpkin bars were salvageable. The pie fell apart. In blind baking, the crust totally shrank on itself. (I tried to get it cold again before I put it in the oven, but it clearly was still too warm and overworked.) I went ahead and filled it anyway, but the pumpkin never set properly. The apples weren't soft enough... the whole thing was kind of terrible. I took a picture for posterity. And then I dumped the pie.

Sigh.

3 Sixty Five, Day 56

This is one of my favorite pies to make and to eat. I've been craving one ever since a certain friend whispered sweet nothings about chess pie into my ear. Unfortunately, my game was off when I put this little beauty together. Somehow I managed to overwork the crust and then parbake it at a too-low temperature, resulting in a badly-shrunken crust. I forgot to dock it before parbaking it, resulting in the bottom crust souffleing up. As I put it in the oven, I managed to slosh a generous amount of custard underneath the crust. It would have been funny, if only it were happening to someone else.

In short, it won't win any beauty contests. Until we cut into it, that is.

"Spirit in the Stillness” is a gorgeous necklace made with deep purple natural amethyst beads, with accents of turquoise and labradorite heishe (pronounced “hee-she”). Amethyst colored Swarovski crystals and charlotte beads complete the piece, along with a sterling silver flower toggle clasp.

Amethyst is the stone associated with the Sixth, or Third Eye Chakra, which is the center for spirituality and intuition. It enhances feelings of joy and serenity, and promotes insight. Amethyst is also the birthstone for the month of February. Turquoise is associated with the throat chakra and is said to enhance communication.

Labradorite is a beautiful grayish stone, and when the light hits it at the right angle, it sets off a gorgeous flash of blue, green or even orange and yellow. From the Encyclo-bead-ia: “Labradorite is a tremendously spiritual stone. …It is especially helpful for people who tend to overwork. It helps us regain our energy and aids our bodies and spirits in healing themselves. If you practice meditation (or would like to), focusing on labradorite can help you enter and maintain the meditative state. Like the sound and glistening beauty of a gentle rain, this gemstone quiets us physically, emotionally and spiritually.”

Because the stones I used in this necklace are natural, this piece can never be exactly duplicated. It is a genuine one-of-a-kind. The necklace measures 19 inches from end to end. The focal bead hangs down an extra 1 ¼”.

Mmm... if I am going to use WC pencils over the top of watercolour I have to make sure that I do NOT overwork it!!!

There is a freshness about this sketch in the watercolour that I like...not 100% sure the WC pencils were a good idea - I could have easily worked it up a bit more with watercolour... ...but it is so much fun to experiment. There is no doubt that I had fun scribbling!

I had a booth at a recent craft show and so spent the week painting while I sat in my booth.

This guy was so fun to paint. I really had to school myself not to overwork the fur as I wanted the yellow to show through to keep the loose look to the coat.

From the outside, Japan does not seem like a good place to work. Too often, companies are in the news for the wrong reasons: employees become victims of “death by overwork”, wages are not rising fast enough, compensation is based on seniority instead of merit, there is a lack of diversity from factory floors all the way up to boardrooms, and workplace policies typically do not favour women, foreigners or people with disabilities.

Though campaigns such as Premium Friday, and policies that cap overtime or relax immigration and residency rules, are steps in the right direction, policymakers and corporate bosses still have work to do. How will the government approach the issue of workplace reform? And what is corporate Japan doing to improve work–life balance and productivity?

So i'm giving myself a little Flickr break...just for about a week, until things calm down at work a little and i'm not spending 13+ hours there every day.

In the meantime, i guess i can somehow try to catch up on the backlog, which is like a week's worth at this point anyway, and then i can start up again when i feel slightly less like jumping off a bridge.

Gas is a normal and common part of the digestion process. A healthy adult passes gas anywhere between 13 and 21 times during a day. However, the inability to release gas from your intestines might also cause pain and bloating. Overeating, chewing gum, drinking with a straw, eating certain types of foods, smoking, and swallowing …

I didn't have much time for the lesson this week, so I tried to keep my subject simple to try to really focus on the edges. This is a bowl of watermelon. I was going to do a cupcake, but I couldn't resist the red watermelon in the bright green bowl.

So, the bowl certainly isn't much, nor is the sketch in general to anyone but me most likely, but I was really thinking about hard vs. soft edges the whole time, primarily the hard edges of the melon against the bowl (change of plane and color) and the softer yet still distinct edges of each melon chunk to its neighbor.

I tried this a few times, totally loving the way watercolor can describe watermelon. Super fun to add water to the red and see it instantly form the texture of the melon. But enough of that, I had to get it finished somehow. In trying to resolve the interior melon edges, I overworked it and lost the highlights, but the experiment was useful. I knew immediately that ink would be too heavy for the edges.

First, I tried shaping the chunks with deeper red. That didn't quite do it, so I tried light shadow lines with paint. Okay, but looked a bit weird. Tried punching up the red a little to see if it would help somehow, but that was the overwork. Oh well! Next was a dark gray watercolor pencil, and that seemed to be about right, wish I'd tried that first. I have some Noodlers Lexington Gray in one of my Lamy pens, so I used that to define the bowl just for fun. I didn't care so much about how well I drew the bowl--I was after the edges idea, and I think I learned quite a bit from the process.

A scheme where many members of the public overworked a group of cubs for little money. eg Bob (5p) a Job - if they could get away with it.

If you wanted to go off on your own and knock of strangers doors to see if they wanted to let you inside to chores, nothing was really thought wrong of the matter.

Good prices could be obtained, if you wanted to hire parts of your cub uniform out to non-cubs. A cub cap on a non cub wearing play clothes gave the excuse that they were willing to do more messy jobs and not get their uniform dirty (the Job card was left in the uniform - excuse).

In ancient Greece, there lived a mother and daughter who were both servants in a grand household. Their names were Demetria and Persephone. They worked tirelessly, day and night, to keep the household running smoothly. They were respected by their employers for their hard work and dedication, but they were also treated as mere property and had no rights.

Despite the harsh conditions of their lives, Demetria and Persephone were close and loved each other deeply. They were each other's only family and their bond was unbreakable. They would often talk about their dreams of one day being free and living a life of their own.

Their fortunes changed when the household was visited by a wealthy merchant, who was immediately taken by Persephone's beauty and grace. Without hesitation, he offered to buy Persephone from her owners, to take her as his own personal servant. Demetria and Persephone were devastated at the thought of being separated, but they knew they had no choice but to accept the offer.

The mother and daughter were torn apart, Demetria was left behind to continue her life as a servant, while Persephone was taken to a faraway city to serve the merchant. Demetria was heartbroken, her only hope was that her daughter would be treated kindly and would have a better life.

However, Persephone's life in the merchant's household was far from the life of luxury she had imagined. She was overworked and mistreated, her beauty and grace were nothing but a commodity for her new owner to exploit. She longed for her mother's love and comfort, but she knew that she would never see her again.

Persephone eventually fell ill and died, alone and unloved. Demetria never knew what happened to her daughter and spent the rest of her days in grief, longing for her lost child. Their tragic story serves as a reminder of the cruelty and injustice of the time, where people were treated as nothing more than property, and the tragedy that can be caused by the greed of the powerful.

There was a gas chamber at Dachau (inside the new crematorium), and it may have been tested on prisoners, but there was no large-scale murder of prisoners there, as Dachau was not a death camp. Most of the prisoners who died at Dachau died of disease, malnutrition, and overwork, and the new crematorium was built to dispose of their bodies.
