This spotted orbweaver picked a lovely spot next to a pond to spin its web.

Went on a hike in the woods a couple days ago now that the autumn weather is in full effect. Found lots of great leaves (like the one I posted yesterday) but also came across a lot of spiders. This is a Marbled Orbweaver (Araneus marmoreus) and they are quite common to the US and Canada. This one was on a large web but retreated to a curled up leaf when we startled it. It allowed me to get very close with the macro, of course, it didn't exactly have anywhere else to run.

To get the web to seeming float the orb weaver has long tethers of web stretch from tree top to tree top, and down to the ground.

She seemed to like the rose leaves that had moisture on them and hid for a while underneath one.

I don’t get to see this species very often so I was thrilled to find one that late August day.

I was fortunate to observe several individuals of the Basilica Orbweaver, Mecynogea lemniscata, while we were in Georgia, USA. Their web is an orb in the horizontal plane, pulled up into a dome.
