Edible Parts: Oil, Seed,
Edible Uses: Cereal
Seed - cooked. A pleasant nutty taste and very nutritious. The seed has a high oil content and can be eaten on its own or used as a flavoring. It should not be eaten raw because it contains cyanide but this is destroyed in the cooking process.
CAUTION: The raw seed contains cyanide and should not be eaten raw. The cooked seed is perfectly safe.
MEDICINAL USES: Antirheumatic, Carminative, Emollient, Ophthalmic, Poultice, Stomachic,
The plant is antirheumatic, carminative and stomachic. The oil in the seed has soothing and lubricating properties, and is used in medicines to soothe tonsillitis, sore throats, coughs, colds, constipation, gravel and stones. When mixed with an equal quantity of lime water it is used to treat burns and scalds. A poultice of the fresh crushed leaves has been used to treat eye problems. A tincture of the entire plant is used in the treatment of diarrhea. The fresh herb is boiled and taken internally for the treatment of rheumatic pains, heartburn, colds, coughs and dropsy. A poultice of the plant is applied to bruises to reduce the swelling. The seeds are emollient. An eye medicine is made from them. An infusion of the roots is used as an eyewash.
OTHER USES: Cosmetic, Fiber, Hair, Paper
A drying oil is obtained from the seed. Used mainly for lighting, though it could also be used in all the ways that linseed oil (from Linum usitatissimum) is used - in paints, varnishes etc.. An infusion of the whole plant is used as a hair and skin wash. It is said to be very beneficial to the skin and also to help prevent hair loss. A good fiber is obtained from the stems, it is inferior to flax (Linum usitatissimum) but is used for making cloth, nets, string, baskets, mats etc., and in paper making. When used for paper making, the stems are harvested in late summer or autumn when they are two thirds yellow and are then retted. The fiber is then stripped from the stem, cooked for two hours or more with lye and then beaten in a Hollander beater.
Women receive Caritas-funded beans, rice, and unimix (a nutritious powder made from soy and other foods) at a parish center near Marsabit, northern Kenya.
In summer 2011, after years of poor rains, this area of Kenya was devastated by drought. Wells dried up, huge numbers of livestock died, and people killed each other over vanishing grazing land and water. People grew weak from hunger and at least one child in this area died.
During the worst of the drought, Caritas distributed food, trucked in water, and brought hay for animals that remained alive. Although it started raining in mid-October 2011, it will take time for crops to grow and herds to restart, so Caritas continues to provide food to families that are especially vulnerable.

KIWASH in partnership with county nutrition and health departments are working to promote consumption of nutritious dense and diverse foods as well as improve food security at the household level.
In November 2016, KIWASH supported the establishment of an agribusiness demonstration farm at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital to display various kitchen gardening technologies such as multi-storey gardens, keyhole gardens, moist and raised bed gardens, hanging gardens and recycled tire gardens. The farm is managed by Hope for Kisumu Youth Achievers Group, a support group for people living positively with HIV.
During a visit to the farm in March, the Chief Officer of Health Kisumu County Dr. Ojwang Lusi appreciated the importance of the demonstration farm where pregnant women and mothers attending the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) clinic at the health facility visit and learn simple gardening technologies to help them grow various nutritious foods at their homes.
“Through our partnership with USAID, we have made a lot of progress in improving water supply, hygiene and sanitation, and nutrition among poor urban and rural households in the county,” said Dr. Ojwang Lusi.
The chief officer distributed hygiene kits to 100 pregnant women and mothers who have been sensitized on household water treatment, handwashing, benefits of kitchen gardening and recommended diet diversification practices by KIWASH.

What a combo - beenie-weenies and a PB&J sammich! The drink is a Chek Peach Soda. Nehi used to make that and I liked it a lot then they stopped making it. Winn-Dixie carries their own brand of sodas called Chek and they still have the peach. Wish they made something similar to Wink and Kickapoo Joy Juice!
The Large Blue (Maculinea arion) must have the weirdest life-cycle of all the 18,000 known butterfly species on the planet. Many butterflies in the “Blue” family have a special relationship with ants, their larvae exchanging a nutritious secretion for protection from predators. The Large Blue (in fact all five European species) takes this to a different level for after a few weeks of feeding on Wild Thyme, it is taken into the nest of a red ant (usually Myrmica sabuleti) where it feeds on the ant grubs. More amazingly, both the Large Blue caterpillar and pupa produce sounds (by rubbing together specialised edges to two abdominal segments) which are similar to the queen ant, but unlike the sounds made by mere workers. The ants protect it like a queen too, even though it behaves like a cuckoo in the nest. Like the (European) Cuckoo, it usually destroys the nest of its host.
The Large Blue has always been a rare butterfly in Britain and unfortunately the final original British colony declined to extinction in 1979. The original population was an endemic subspecies “eutyphron”, but similar-looking butterflies were successfully introduced from Sweden in 1983, and now it thrives in a number of colonies in south-west England. These were photographed in a remote valley in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire, where they apparently survived naturally until 1976.
The scientific name is Maculinea arion. Recently it has been placed in the genus Galucopsyche (means blue/grey butterfly) but I am reluctant to drop Maculinea (means row of spots). Arion was a Greek poet and musician of the 7th century BC. After winning a music competition in Sicily he sailed home to Corinth, but the sailors wanted to murder Arion and steal his prize money. They allowed him to play one last time and his beautiful music attracted a school of dolphins. He leapt over the side and one carried him to safety on its back.

Sioux City Community School District participates in the federally funded Summer Food Service Program administered by the Iowa Department of Education. The program provides nutritious meals to children who normally access meals at school during the academic year, but who might otherwise go without during the summer months. Available on weekdays at no cost to youth aged 1-18, the meals meet the same dietary guidelines as those served during the school year. Adults may also purchase a complete meal for $4.
In order to provide meal service at a variety of locations, the Sioux City school district has partnered with a number of local community organization sponsors including the Launch Pad Children’s Museum, Tyson Foods, churches, malls, city parks, schools, and community centers. Currently, meals are served at 27 different meal sites throughout Sioux City.
Last summer, the school district started a mobile operation called Food on the Fly which utilizes two renovated school buses to expand meal service to neighborhood parks such as the Leeds Splash Pad, Dale Street Park, Rosehill Park, Children’s Launch Pad, Cone Park Splash Pad, and to the Verizon Camp at Western Iowa Tech.
The district has offered summer meals for over 20 years and distributes over 2,100 combined breakfasts and lunches.

August 2019, Njoben, Central River Region in The Gambia. August 2019, Njoben, Central River Region in The Gambia. After a long morning working in the garden the women return home with songs and dances. The FAO has been helping to expand the Farmer Field School in Njoben (Central River Region -CRR) since 2014, with funding from the EU. The field has been extended from one hectare to five hectares. Today, the various crops grown here: tomatoes, orange fleshed sweet potato, herbs, peppers, cassava, cabbage, okra, rice and many other nutritious foods are grown and consumed by more than 200 women and 14 men, and their families, from the local community. The surplus is sold, and this allows many of the families to improve their livelihoods and send their children to school. Another noteworthy improvement is the comprehensive borehole and water distribution system that has been established, thereby relieving almost 500 women farmers from the hardship of drawing water from the wells.
The community has been trained on gardening and helped agricultural extension workers to introduce more varieties of vegetables and apply climate smart agriculture. Similar support has been expanded to seven other community gardens throughout the country. This component is part of the “Post-crisis response to food and nutritious insecurity in The Gambia” (Project code: GM/FED/38780)
