Scopello is a delightful seaside village, part of the municipality of Castellammare del Golfo, in the province of Trapani.
Its curious name most likely owes it to the two stacks or rocks (scopulus in Latin, scopelos in Greek), symbol of the locality.
The village of Scopello is divided into two parts. A central part called the baglio, and an external part where Piazza Nettuno stands out with the drinking trough and a small church in the center.
The word baglio (in Sicilian bagghiu) refers to the internal courtyard of a farm or to a small fort.
The sea is certainly the main attraction of Scopello. And even more, its wonderful tonnara that we meet at the foot of the village, in a cove of extraordinary beauty.
The Tonnara di Scopello is one of the oldest in all of Sicily.

Florence, the capital of Tuscany, is an open-air museum. Here, I will post some photos of the city taken during the New Year festive season. There was no snow, but that didn't stop the city from dressing up in festive clothes.

Detail from the Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune) in the northern end of Piazza Navona - the basin itself dates to 1574 and is the work of Giacomo della Porta - who also made the Moor fountain at the other end of the piazza. The fountain was for a long time known as Fontana dei Calderari and the Neptune figure which give the fountain its name was added much later - with all the other sculptures. They were added after a competition in 1873 when the city of Rome wanted something suitable to match the other fountains in the piazza and not just a basin of water. Neptune himself was made by Antonio della Bitta, while the other figures were made by Gregorio Zappalà.
Piazza del Popolo (People's square) is one of the most popular squares in Rome and was the gateway to the city during Empire times.
In the square we can see the churches: Chiesa Santa Maria dei Miracoli and Basilica di Santa Maria in Montesanto (both seen in the larger photo), two apparently identical temples but that hide some differences.
In the center of the square is an Egyptian obelisk of 24 meters dedicated to Rameses II, known as Obelisco Flamínio. Located in the Circus Maximus from the year 10 BCE, it was transferred to Piazza del Popolo in 1589. Surrounding the obelisk four lions spouting water from their mouths.
On the sides we see two beautiful fountains:
- Fontana della Dea di Roma
- Fontana del Nettuno
A magnificent statue of the mythical god of the sea, against a classic orange facade of an urban residence.
Τhe Neptune Fountain, also known in Italian as the Fontana del Nettuno, sits at the northern end of Piazza Navona, on the opposite side of the Fontana del Moro.
The monumental complex was designed in 1574 by Giacomo della Porta, who had also designed the basin of the Fontana del Moro. The work was sponsored by Pope Gregory XIII.
Genoa : Villa del Principe - Garden
The Palace overlooks the sea where Andrea Doria had built a private port for his fleet. Between the port and the Palace there is a magnificent Italian-style garden, with splendid tree species and a beautiful fountain with the statue of the god of the sea Neptune, whose presence is not entirely random.
Today it is all privately owned by the Doria - Pamphili family and since 1995 it has been used as a museum and is open to the public.

At Piazza Navona, Rome. The church on the right is the Baroque church Sant'Agnese in Agone and the fountain is Fontana del Nettuno (Fountain of Neptune).
There is actually one more church to spot in this picture - but it looks so much less grand, that it is easy to miss. On the left side, almost at the end of the piazza, next to a covered up building, there is a white facade. That is the church Nostra Signora del Sacro Cuore.

Fountain of Neptune - Rome - Italy
The Fountain of Neptune (Italian: Fontana del Nettuno) is a fountain in Rome, Italy, located at the north end of the Piazza Navona. It was once called "Fontana dei Calderari" because it was located close to a small alley with blacksmith's workshops, makers of pots and pans and of other metal based businesses, all of them generating heat.
The restoration of the Roman Aqua Virgo aqueduct in 1570 was immediately followed by the start of work on a continuation water supply pipe towards the district of the old Campo Marzio, which following the diminution of the city's size and importance was left as the most densely populated part of the city. Restoration of a piped water supply in turn permitted the construction of several public fountains. The basin of the Fontana del Nettuno, (without the sculptures), was designed in 1574 by Giacomo Della Porta, who was also responsible for the Moor Fountain at the other side of the square. It was sponsored by pope Gregory XIII. The lower part of the basin consists of white marble and the upper part of the local stone from Pietrasanta. For the next 300 years, the fountain survived without statues.
Nineteenth-century infrastructure developments reduced dependence on urban fountains for drinking and washing purposes but increased their visual and political importance, especially following the creation of the Italian state with Rome as its capital after 1870. The fountain as it exists today was finally completed in 1878 by Antonio della Bitta, who added the imposing sculpture of Neptune fighting with an octopus, and Gregorio Zappalà, who created the other sculptures, based on the mythological theme of the "Nereids with Cupids and walruses". This statuary was added following a competition in 1873, in order to balance that of the Moor Fountain on the south side of the piazza and of the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) at its centre.

Poseidonia, now Paestum located in Southern Italy. Photo of the Second Temple of Hera II or Poseidon/Nettuno built in the Doric order around 460–450 BC, stands adjacent to the first temple of Hera. It name still disputed to this day by scholars to be dedicated to Hera or Poseidon (Greek) / Neptune (Roman). Instead of the typical 20 flutes on each column as of the time, they have 24 flutes. The Temple of Hera II or Poseidon also has a wider colum
in size and smaller intervals between columns. To this day scholar have no reason, maybe in their new land of Magna Grecia they wanted to be different.

Ogromna fontanna została wzniesiona w latach 1650-51 na polecenie papieża Innocentego X, a zaprojektował ją najsławniejszy architekt baroku, Jan Bernini. Czterej muskularni mężczyźni z białego marmuru znajdujący się na skale to posągi symbolizujące cztery rzeki: Nil, Ganges, Dunaj i Rio de la Plata oraz cztery znane wówczas kontynenty: Afrykę, Azję, Europę i Amerykę.
