The hike arranged by the Natural History society to look at the Jamaican Iguana habitat in the Hellshire hills, didn't yield any iguanas, but we did see a few other interesting sights.
The vervain hummingbird is the second smallest bird in the world. The bee huumingbird in Cuba I believe is the smallest.
Look how tiny it's nest is.

In order to form a mental map of the existing nests in my back yard which will help me locate swarms in the upcoming honeybee swarm season, I was looking through binoculars and high up in the top of a large oak tree is a large squirrels nest with honeycomb underneath.
White-browed Woodswallow female doing guard duty at a nest in a particularly battered tree-trunk at Charlotte Plains.
(Second of two) This entrance to a Swallow Tanager's nest was on a steep bank cut along the main drive at the Asa Wright Nature Centre.
This encaustic was done during my workshop. I just love the texure the background created and hated to do too much for the image. So I carved a simple nest. It is part of a pair.
Breaking the sequence of the 366 project. Looks like the local swans are preparing to nest again.
The Pen (female) lost her mate last year a month or so after their last clutch of cygnets had hatched, but in the past 4 to 5 months she seems to have taken another mate, so we await to see if they can produce some more cygnets.
Egrets and Black-crowned night herons share an area at Bombay Hook in Delaware for nest building and breeding...thus the photos of both of these. More than a dozen of each offer photo ops.
A bird feeds her babies in her nest, built in a 'Bank America" sign at 16th & JFK Boulevard, Philadelphia.
There are three 'Bank America' signs like this around the sides of the building, and every letter 'c' has a nest in it.

This is what's left of it after I sprayed it. It amazes me how durably built these nests are. I was not happy having to do this because these bugs are pollinators, but with the work we need to do on the back shed, a wasps nest is not something we want so close by. By the time we get at the work this could be much larger, so, I decided it had to go. What's left are some eggs that will probably not survive since they are exposed to the air and its in the 90's today. I'll check it again in a couple of days to make sure no wasps are returning.
Most of the Florida shorebird nests I have see have been on the open beach. This Wilson's Plover cleverly decided to make its nest in this clump of beach grass.

This is probably last year's baby....they're gonna have to start making reservations for this nest!!! :) lol...have a nice Monday all! :)
Loons nest along the edge of water....we came across this one in June while kayaking in Lake of Two Rivers, Algonquin Park. He wouldn't leave the nest, but certainly wasn't happy about our presence. Recently we went back to Algonquin and the parents and one remaining baby were out on the lake at sunset. They were happy to let us kayak along side them while they taught the baby to catch fish
This is a very simple quilt made from one and a bit charm packs of Nest by Tula Pink for Moda. I really like this fabric, especially framed by the white, which I think sets it off nicely. I tossed up doing a pieced border, but decided that which would be nicer, and I'm glad I went with the white. The back is plain white also.
