A little nest that fell out of a yew tree. Hard to make the shape visible in a photo.

Happy Spring everyone!

Goodbye 2016, Goodbye Honest Ed's. When I was a teenager in Toronto, every Wednesday and Saturday they'd have a sale on 2 selected vinyl records for about 2 bucks each. I'd race there on my bike and score. The things Ed Mirvish chose to sell were sometimes bizarre and always intermixed with celebrity photos signed to him, the fights for sale items could be rapacious, the publicity stunts were generous (free Christmas turkeys), signs screamed puns and insults ("Ed's a slob - he keeps dropping his prices!"), he brought in every kid and immigrant from miles around, and the business model worked. It was fantastic and weird, and it lasted 68 years, until today. Much love to Ed Mirvish, as well as Wayne Reuben, the in-house sign painter since 1994. I went back to photograph the store a year ago and will post more soon. A new era begins.

I'm so happy that I found him/her in a cozy little tree!

I have been priviledged to observe several sets of nesting eagles! This is one of the nests where one parent is in the nest while the other hovers above.

Dad found this wasp nest behind the back porch lighting fixture.

The new play area for all children in Ruigrijk just opened for 4 days before I took this photo. Looking towards the entrance (left) and terrace of 't Verwende Nest (food and bevarage point).

Nest!

Due to the disappearance of Polka Marina in Ruigrijk, a new activity for young visitors was sought. While the older brothers and sisters have fun in the exciting and big attractions of Ruigrijk, fathers and mothers with small children stayed behind. De Efteling wanted to add something for these young children, who are still too small for the attractions. Something that suits both the area and the young target group.

Designer Robert-Jaap Jansen; "Nest! is a secret place in the woods between the Game Gallery and De Vliegende Hollander, where the different atmospheres of Ruigrijk merge into a world ridden by children. The little ones can get ready to take on the challenges of Ruigrijk at a later age. endured. Learned young is done old!”

“It was immediately clear that it had to become a playground from the perspective of children. Moreover, it has always been important that all children, with or without disabilities, can play together in this new playground. The path of life arose from this idea: the decking path of almost 80 meters long, over which children can ride in a wheelchair or buggy. And which you can also run around. The dragon totem also has multiple functions. From the ground and therefore also with a wheelchair, you can look through the periscope eye and enjoy the view from 6.5 meters high. At one of the slides you slide right past the dragon's teeth via the dragon's tongue. The small slide is also accessible for children in wheelchairs, who can make a transfer with supervision. In the heart of Nest! There will be a large wheelchair-accessible waterbed that looks like a wobbly treasure, map and sea map.”

Matilda was hereafter gently removed to a nice, clean, unoccupied nest box.

We got the broken wing display on the first passing, but on the way back she was sitting on her precious eggs.

Giant half square triangles made up this quilt top. I used 1 layer cake and 2 extra 10" squares.

It was no longer occupied, but had been a fixture long enough that the drive had a sign pointing to it.

Breixo finally got herself and Gwawr a proper nest.

The Blue Herons are busy building their nests in a local rookery. It was a day with hazy white clouds, filtering the sun and making the sky white, just set off this bird in flight. Like I was in a studio with a background...

Yesterday's adventure - 30 May 2017

Fred and his brother Bert discovered this eagles nest 2007 but didn't record its location. Yesterday we decided it was time to find it again and record its position with accurate coordinates.

We got a buzz when we finally found it again.

You can see Fred standing below the large wandoo tree in the habitat photo!

At Barr Lake looking tor the Eagle's newly built nest I spotted this but it's not the Eagle's nest.

Photo taken from Weill Hall by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology.

Two of the four Eagles I know of are building a new nest. Looks like they're two days into it, lots of work to do.
