When you took science did you ever put iron shavings on top of a piece of white paper and move them around the paper with a magnet underneath? This common science lab helps demonstrate magnetic field lines. These photos from the Northern Light show from last Friday reminded me of that fun experiment.

Figuring it Out

Here was the shot of the bridge at Spider Lake with just Nikki and Len. We figured it worked best if I just stay behind the camera and fire off enough shots to get at least one good one. While Nikki isn’t looking at the camera, rather checking out Len for that next treat, she is at least sitting pretty…. Awe the joys of photographing pets in beautiful outdoor spots.

We watched this bear chase fish by the mouth of the river for about ten more minutes when he/she stopped and started walking up river just below us across the bank. It was fun to finally have it closer to us. Keep in mind we are up in a tower, completely quiet, and protected. He/she headed up where we had watched large clumps of salmon just hanging in the river and started fishing again under the trees.

This is one of my favourite shots of Nikki in ball play. She has an uncanny eye for where the ball is at all times. I often use her in practice with different lenses and settings. I was working with my 105mm macro lens here and highlight metering. I really do think our pets help photography practice fun!

How fast can you pan?? In this case I had a split second after I heard the trumpet of these Canadian geese to turn and look up - my finger already pressing the shutter. I wish I’d known they were coming as they presented with the perfect Canadian Goose “V”, but I was happy to see a little something show up on my playback. I have to say the Z9 surprised me with its performance on a fast moving shot (photographer and subject). It’s nice to have a little blue sky in my feed as well!

It was quite fascinating to watch this bear stick his head right under the water, open his eyes, and look for fish. I never tire of watching animal behaviour - I just wish I could spend more time out with the bears!
