Every now and then I post a photo merely to stop the onslaught of requests for more information about a geographic feature. Such is the case here. I have been besieged with bazillions of e-mails, Flickr messages, and telegrams. My e-mail provider has threatened to double my subscription cost because of the volume of traffic to my account.
The feature in question, which is appears in the huge panorama above is what I call the "straight drainage" for lack of an official name. It is a gently-sloping feature in Arches National Park that is---guess what?---straight. It lies at the base of a sandstone wall of varying height and might be the result of erosion along a fault line. I labeled its lower and upper ends with notes on the image. This view, taken from Panorama Point or thereabouts, includes Delicate Arch at far right. At far left is the shadowy canyon of Salt Wash. The upper end of the straight drainage is at the center of this WikiMapia aerial view. In the largest image, it's possible to just barely discern hikers on their way to Delicate Arch.
When I took the photos making up this panorama I immediately heard the drainage call to me, so I planned from that moment to explore it. A year later, in May 2008, I answered the call and walked its entire length. I hiked up to Delicate Arch, then back-tracked a bit, left the trail, and hiked cross-country to reach the upper end of the drainage. Then I followed the drainage to its lower end when it meets the canyon precipice of Salt Wash. It was easy walking the whole way.
I disavow any knowledge of exaggerating, shading the truth, or telling a tall tale. Likewise with any intention to fib, mislead, or con my viewers. In addition, I disavow any knowledge of posting the photo simply because I like it.

I met up with my friend Chris a week ago for the annual German Car Festival in North Vancouver. I gave him my E-500 and the Olympus ED 12-60mm f/2.8-4.0 SWD to try out and he ended up with his own dSLR less than a week down the road. We went wandering on Saturday evening to give his new two-lens Olympus E-520 kit its first workout. Shangri-La Hotel, Vancouver, BC. July 4, 2009.
Oh, and I know Chris got a really cool shot of this shallow reflecting pond, so I'll be watching for it to pop up in his photostream.

as tired as i am today ( inhaled dust or something at work that has made me have
fever-like symptoms,and felt sick) this was about all i could muster up.
for those wondering,no i did not light this in typical fashion.this was all done in a
completely dark room. the long exposure is to thank for this effect. I was curious what
Dr pepper in a wine glass would look like once i had "painted" it with a flashlight.
so after probably a dozen attempts to illuminate the dark liquid, i developed a routine of
- blow smoke with my E-cig and light it from directly below (3 short bursts) and then,without shining my flashlight at the camera, sticking it into the dr pepper,and trying to light up the sides
with the beam of light,then lighting it from behind and below,and finally giving one short blast of
light to the left side. this is the end result.
amazing what a little experimenting can do for opening up your imagination ;)

This was one of those rare times a stranger approached me instead of the other way around. What a treat.
I went downtown a bit early for my astronomy class and strolled through the university campus with my eyes open for someone to meet. The first two people I approached were very polite but said they were late for class and I had to wish them well and send them on their way. I changed gears and instead of my usual choosing a stranger and then trying to manage the background and light issues, I was looking at a large boulder which is part of the campus landscaping and examining how the light was falling. As I was standing there, this young man appeared out of nowhere and asked me how I like my camera. This led to an animated conversation between two photo buffs about cameras and it took me several minutes to “wake up” and realize I may have met my Stranger. He clearly wasn’t in a big rush so I popped the question and the answer was “Sure.” Meet Mac.
We shook hands and I explained the project and my boulder idea. Mac was happy to oblige and after reviewing the first photo (“Oh, that face!” he said) we decided to do a few more. I was pleased that his glasses weren’t causing reflection problems because I thought they gave the image a nice touch. We played around with my reflector and Mac gave me a couple of tips but in the end I concluded the reflector wasn’t doing a lot so I put it away and took a couple more photos and were back to our conversation.
Mac was a very likeable fellow and fun to chat with. He is 20 and a Sociology student at the university. He grew up in nearby Brampton. He’s clearly a guy with varied interests and told me his photography is mainly photojournalism. He’s pursuing a project on a community near Lake Erie which has undergone considerable change over the years and is using photography to document the theme. He has sold some of his photos to magazines. He has also been a sponsored skateboard enthusiast for several years which tells me he is skilled enough to represent the sport in a commercial capacity.
Sometimes even brief interactions with Strangers gives a fair glimpse into their qualities. I experienced Mac as a very friendly, mature and confident young man who I expect will succeed in whatever field he chooses. I was impressed by the way he has already combined his interest in photography with his academic field - Sociology.
Mac uses a Leica for his journalistic pursuits but also owns an Olympus E-M5 which he likes for its compactness and the quality of its lenses. He is considering upgrading his Olympus to an E-M1 and is interested in adding a prime lens or two to his Olympus kit. I told him how happy I am with my E-M1 and we discussed lenses. I offered to let him check out the viewfinder etc. of my camera. He thanked me but said he’d played around with one already at the camera store. (Something tells me he's already caught the camera upgrade bug!)
I discovered I was running late for my class and had to part, telling Mac how much I appreciated the chat and how glad I was he'd stopped to ask about my camera. I will email his photo and he will email a link to his work. We talked about meeting up sometime with our cameras.

After a visit to the Bowie High Website, I found the instructor / sponsor of the Art Club (Amber Bohanna) who kindly responded to my e mail. She informed me that HEB sponsored the Art Club with supplies and materials for creating this art piece for the First Night Austin Parade (http://www.firstnightaustin.org/)Here's a quote from her detailed response:
"We used cardboard construction, paper mache, and tape sculptures (Marilyn and the coke Bottle). The Marlin was supposed to be standing and pushing the cart from behind, but we were short on time (we had about two weeks to find time after school during finals weeks to get the cart done). The tape sculptures are made by putting saran wrap around parts of the model and then wrapping that with about 3 or 4 layers of clear packing tape. We painted flesh color paper and stuffed that inside the Marilyn. For the Coke Bottle, we wrapped one of the curvy girl students we have (I think the coke bottle design was based on a women's body) and paint the inside with the brown-black color to look like liquid, and then stuffed it newspaper. Tape sculptures are a great way to make inexpensive castings, and people seem to really like them.
After it was displayed in HEB for a couple of weeks, students from the art club pushed it through the First Night Austin Parade. It was a lot of fun and we got great reactions. We have to think of an even better idea for next year:)"

A Great Blue Heron tends to its fledgling. Wakodahatchee Wetlands, Fl.
A test run with the new Panasonic 100-400mm lens with my E-M1. Nice but just a tad inconsistent on the focus in less then optimum light for my taste.
My E-510 had suffered service maintenance one day.
Those dudes(not the two on the picture) fixed the problem but the grip rubber was actually damaged, so the rubber vent off the camera one day.
Then I decided to change design. You can read some Mark Newson/Pentax influence.

Zach woke up with a little bit of a rash across his chest and forehead this morning. I sent him to day care anyway with instructions for her to keep a close eye on it and alert me if it got any worse. I just received this picture in my e-mail inbox.
Some initials shots with one of my 2 new lens aquisitions: the Olympus 17mm f1.8 M4/3 lens.
This lens has had some fairly mixed reviews, but I have to say I am very pleased with it. It's plenty sharp enough for me (but then I was quite happy with the sharpness of the all 17mm f2.8 pancake lens!), it focuses super quick on my E-M10, and it just looks and handles superbly.
From the final match in kuwait league between al-qadsiah spoting club 6 and kuwait sporting club 5 (Penalty) In june-1-2009.
This original wallpaper is for sale. This pictures is only the sample of my wallpaper and therefore small in resolution.
