油分が多く、磨きこむと大変綺麗に仕上がる。

伐った直後は褐色だが空気や熱で反応し紫色が濃くなっていく。
熱で濃くなると黒く変化し放置し大気に晒されていると茶色に。
磨き込むととても綺麗な艶が出る。
気乾比重が1.00弱と重く
「水に沈む木」でもある。
家具、唐木、仏壇、楽器等に用いられる。

ムラサキ科 広葉樹
黄～茶の肌に黒い縞模様、インパクトの大きさに驚く。
磨くと深みを増し、綺麗な艶に独特の模様
個性が際立つ。
気乾比重は１弱と、硬い。
家具、仏壇、楽器等に用いられる。

黒檀（写真はシマコクタン）
カキノキ科カキノキ属 広葉樹
黒色と茶褐色が交互に入り独特の縞模様となる。
稀に黒一色のものがあり
特別に「本黒檀」「マグロ」と呼ばれ、大変高価。
非常に硬いが割れ易く、加工には注意が必要。
気乾比重が1.00前後と重く
「水に沈む木」でもある。
家具、唐木、仏壇、楽器等に用いられる。

マメ科 広葉樹
幹の中心部は紫～褐色だが、外側（皮に近い部分）はベージュと
濃淡の色の違いがはっきり出ている。
芯の濃い部分には独特の縞模様が出ており
不規則な模様が美しい。
気乾比重は１を越え、非常に硬い。
家具、唐木、楽器等に用いられる。

サクラ（画像はヤマザクラ：）
バラ科サクラ属 落葉広葉樹
咲き誇るも散り行くも、目に美しい。
香りも良くスモークチップに用いられる。
画像のヤマザクラとソメイヨシノでは肌が変わり
どちらも磨くと美しい艶が出る。
鑑賞のみならず強靭な木質は家具、楽器、彫刻等に用いられる。
気乾比重は0.6と高くはないが、強い。

センダン（栴檀）
センダン科センダン属 落葉高木
淡い茶褐色に独特の濃淡があり
磨き込むと深みが増し、美しい赤茶となる。
繊維の切断面に特徴がある。
家具、建築装飾材の他、琵琶や木魚等に用いられる。
香木のセンダンはビャクダン（白檀）であり、この栴檀とは違う。
