After watching John work like a creep for a moment and a half too long, he stopped sculpting to come up to me and see if I had any questions. We got to talking about how they do the planning for these massive floats (made of styrofoam).
Here is what I learned: They make a smaller scaled mock up, free hand first. Then it is cut into a grid of interlocking pieces. The big chunk of styrofoam has a similar grid drawn onto it and then you sculpt row by row using a projector to help blow the 2d plans up to scale.
This is the most basic of mock ups. The final pattern pieces (23 of'em) will be drafted onto the shell created here. (Adjusting for the fit noted, of course).
Since I'm a design nerd, I use Adobe Illustrator to place rows of concentric circles. 1", 1/2" and then finally 1/4". The design seems a little small, but I want to keep some of the structural integrity since the foot peg on this side is held on by this chunk of soon-to-be swissed cheese aluminum...
