The new Indian census(2011), which put the population at 1.2 billion, has revealed an alarming trend. Rising incomes only seem to accelerate gendercide – the evocative term for the selective abortion of girl foetuses. There were 945 girls per 1,000 boys in the 1991 census, 927 in 2001 and now 914. It's now a crisis and we need to move beyond just acknowledging the issue.The PC & PNDT Act 1994 prohibits any form of sex-determination practise and sex-selective abortion.
According to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) of India; 89,546 cases of cruelty by husband and relatives; 21,397 cases of rape; 11,009 cases of sexual harassment and 5,650 cases of dowry harassment were reported in India during the year 2009.

This great blue heron was in San Diego Zoo, but not a zoo resident. He/she was grooming on a street lamp. At the water bird section of the Zoo (which is open to the space outside), I often spot non-residents sneaking in, enjoying free meals. And it is easy to distinguish them as they still exhibit strong hunting behavior while others just lazily standing around.
Die Schachtschleuse Minden wurde von 1911 bis 1914 im Rahmen des Baus des Mittellandkanals am Wasserstraßenkreuz Minden als Nordabstieg zur Weser gebaut und stellt damit die kürzeste Verbindung zwischen Mittellandkanal und Weser her.
Sie hat eine nutzbare Kammerlänge von 85 m Länge und 10 m Breite. Durch die seitlich angeordneten, in die Konstruktion integrierten, Sparbecken mit einem Füllungsvermögen von 7300 m³ (nur 4000 m³ werden in die Weser abgelassen) ist sie im Gegensatz zum Südabstieg über Ober- und Unterschleuse wassersparend und damit betriebswirtschaftlich zu der Bauzeit auf dem neusten Stand der Technik.
Im Rahmen des Ausbaus der Mittelweser und des Mittellandkanals auf die neue Größenklasse Großmotorgüterschiff wird sie ab 2012 durch den Neubau Weserschleuse Minden ergänzt. Das Bauwerk gilt als technische Attraktion in Minden.
Die Schachtschleuse steht neben der Kanalbrücke und dem Hauptpumpwerk seit 1987 unter Denkmalschutz. Die drei Gebäude sind in die Denkmalliste der Stadt Minden eingetragen.
b Frühjahr 2009 begannen im Umfeld der Schachtschleuse die Vorarbeiten für den Neubau der Weserschleuse. So wurden am Unterhafen Bäume gefällt und der Minigolfplatz für eine Lagerfläche freigeräumt. Am Parkplatz wurden das Restaurant und einige Verkaufspavillons abgerissen. Baubeginn für die neue Schleuse war im August 2010.
