WEEK 6 – Cleveland Kroger, Post-Remodel (III)

Here’s another shot from within the dairy department, this time looking over toward the left-side corner of the building – home to the very first signature greenhouse-build curved wall we’ve seen in this store, believe it or not! At least those are all still intact here on the left side of the store, if not the right side. Note also 1) the fresh and local décor restrooms sign, whose design fits in super well with the rest of the package (again: great attention to detail!), and 2) the dairy décor does not extend all the way along the left-side wall, even though the department itself does. That wall has a different décor feature instead, which we’ll explore momentarily.

These places are public so these photos are too, but just as I tell where they came from, I'd appreciate if you'd say who :)

Unlike last year, when I waited until October to schedule Waterfall Odyssey 2007, leaving many people too short on vacation days, I'm planning Waterfall Odyssey 2008 much earlier in the year, albeit in the midst of a horrific drought (really, I haven't cut my grass in 4 weeks - my Cub Cadet misses me soooo much).

Tentatively planned for July 25th - we'll hit falls either in the Oconee County area (meeting at the McDonalds in Walhalla), or in and around Brevard and the Blue Ridge Parkway (meeting at McDonalds in Brevard). It should be noted that I will be *inside* the McDonalds, most likely eating a Sausage Egg and Cheese McGriddle.

Hikes will be mercifully short, easy to moderate in difficulty (gimme a break, I'm 70% of half a century old).

If you're interested, let me know. If you would be interested, except the day is not good for you, I'm generally pretty flexible, so let me know.

If you don't know what a Waterfall Odyssey 2008 is, or a Waterfall Odyssey 2007, etc, here's the info. A long, long time ago, when I enjoyed photography even more than I do, now (mostly because I shot film, and didn't get to do it very often), I decided to take a day off one day, and go somewhere that wasn't work, and wasn't home. So, I made a round trip of the upstate of South Carolina, shot half a dozen rolls of film, and got 8 waterfalls that day. Because I'm generally pretty goofy, I named my trip "Joe's Waterfall Odyssey". The next year, I took two people with me (one of whom now works at Garmin), and we called it Waterfall Odyssey 2005. Or Waterfall Odyssey 2004. I forget, I've been doing this annually for a while.

What makes a "waterfall odyssey" different than taking a day off of work to go shoot waterfalls, you wonder? Nothing! I just stick a dorky name on it, because I can! If you fall off the mountain, I'll commiserate with you (and I might even call emergency services if you need them), but I claim, and will accept, absolutely no responsibility, whatsoever.

Anyway, if you're interested in participating this year, you should like tell me, and stuff, so I can email you, or flickrmail you, or just walk up and ask you about it later.

If you want to go, Join the Waterfall Odyssey 2008 group. Also, if you're not in the area, but would be willing to round up a group of people that you could take on a local Waterfall Odyssey of your own, and piggyback on our group - flickrmail me - it's no fair that WO2008 is geographically constrained to western North Carolina and South Carolina...

6 of us set out from Los Angeles, CA for Stateline, NV in the evening of the night before. We stayed in 2 adjoining rooms at Whiskey Pete's. I'd never shared adjoining rooms with friends before. Though we mainly socialized in only one of the rooms, it was nice just to have the freedom to leave the door open and see more space that was ours.

About 15 minutes before midnight, before the official beginning of his birthday, I had my boyfriend pursuade Flip to accompany him downstairs to retrieve items forgotten in the car. While they were gone, Stephanie and I comically rushed to decorate the room in the red streamers that I had brought; red being his favorite color. We managed to adorn the window, the entertainment center, and the archway - and to put a canopy of sorts over his bed. Then we shut off the lights. And waited. Within a minute, he returned and we turned on the lights and yelled "Happy Birthday!" and there was happiness.

After no more than 3 hours of sleep, we woke, ate (I tried a McGriddle for the first time and found it to be acceptable but not particularly special) then headed out to the pre-selected destinations. Where we had to go off-road, which was quite often, we left Alan's car where we safely could and piled into Flip's truck, with Stephanie in the back bouncing around and the driver yelling "Bump!" so she'd know when to hold on tight. We saw many amazing, broken down structures and abandoned homes, a vintage, turquoise bus with shattered windows, lakes of rusted-to-shit cans and bottles full of dead beetles, an array of bones and dried out gourds, and so many appliances that we took apart for their glorious insides, like the circles of rotating numbers from within an antique gas pump, the faceplates from an old stove and from the spedometer on the turquoise bus. Flip also walked away with two gorgeously busted typewriters and a metal, bullet-ridden public phone base. My favorite find was the television that was all shot up and alone by the side of an obscure road. Flip pulled over to obtain its circuit boards for my collection and, in the process, Stephanie noticed 3 massive, awe-inspiring lenses. It wasn't easy but all 3 were extracted - and I was fortunate enough, along with Flip and Steph, to get to keep one (as pictured above) at the end of the day. This item alone made the hunt a vast success, as far as I was concerned.

After exploring the day's last destination, we drove several miles on an uncivilized, dirt road back to asphalt, with joshua trees at our sides and quite possibly one of the most extraordinary and magical sunsets in existence before our lucky eyes. Sometimes it's hard not to believe that the sky is constantly being painted, painted just for me, for us. In that moment, all was right with the world. And it was a very happy birthday, indeed.

*Mind you, treasure to us is junk to most people.

An experimental Maple Bacon Cupcakes recipe come to fruition. These were decided by many to be extremely tasty. Many folks thought the marriage of the bacon and maple syrup worked very well a la a good breakfast sandwich or plate. I'm counted among them.

Though this isn't the for faint of heart or cholesterol, I'd recommend experiencing at least one.

A good way to start a day in New York City is a good breakfast and coffee. Bacon & Egg McMuffin, Bacon and Egg McGriddles and hashbrowns on the side. And this all in an industrial decor at McDonald's, the nearest to our hotel.

skittles and the cable box

Okay. It's a McDonald's. It's breakfast time. I'm thinking Sausage McGriddle. No such luck. Maybe an egg biscuit? Nope. Okay, I'll settle for a burrito. "A what?", they ask me. Apparently, all they had was lunch. To top that, there was no beef on the menu. The sandwiches were chicken, fish and veggie. From what I could gather from my sources, it may be illegal to sell beef in India. In India, you can get some good smoke on the streets or a shot of Jack Daniels at a bar to go with your Cuban cigars and you can purchase all kinds of powders that do who-knows-what to a person at every little shop in the city, but no double cheeseburgers. Hhhhmmmmmm....
