Moon's distance from Earth when photographed:
245 682 mi / 395 387 km

Taken with a ED80 Refractor and Canon 500D running in HDR mode using Magic Lantern Firmware, 3 shots merged to get a reasonable overall exposure without blowing out the moon
A sharp look at the Moon in its half phase, where shadow and sunlight divide the surface in two. Along the terminator line, the relief of countless craters and ridges becomes visible, revealing the raw texture of our nearest celestial neighbor.
Taken with an ED100 Refractor and Canon 500D, best 15 of 30 jpg's stacked in Autostakkert, no further processing apart from cropping.

From my archives, a 10 Pane Lunar Mosaic taken in April 2015.
Each pane captured using my trusty Skywatcher 254mm Newtonian & ZWO ASI 120MC Astronomical Imaging Camera.
Session commenced 20:38 UT
Each pane processed with Registax 6 & then stitched using Microsoft I.C.E.
Final image re-processed using Adobe Lightroom
I did hope to get more detail but, according to my notes, seeing conditions were not good.

I have even more cute images of them here:
Brisbane, QLD. D800E + Nikon 300mm + 1.4 TC, MUP mode, ISO 100, f16, 1/4 sec, -4/3 EV. Light toning fluoro, seems to retain better detail. Prefer this to my previous shot posted of the moon, which I thought wasn't very smooth.

The "harvest moon" and "hunter's moon" are traditional terms for the full moons
The "harvest moon" is the full moon closest to the autumnal equinox
Day 22 : Third Quarter Phase of the Moon.
A full moon, visible in the early morning of august 4th, 2020. The moon is offset against clouds drifting past, adding atmosphere and mood to the composition

The waxing and waning aspects of these moons is shown by pluses and minuses: no prizes for guessing which is which! The title is taken from a poem I wrote a million years ago, back in my even-more-ignorant days when I assumed that this type of moon only ever dipped to the West, that the Southern Cross was stable, and that everyone saw the same things in the night skies.
See 'A thin crescent moon dips its belly to the West' as fabric
See '... thin crescent moon...' as wallpaper too - quite fun I think, but I'm biased.

As the year 2011 comes to an end
the moon is waxing towards
fullness. On January 1, 2012 it will be about half-full.

Spectacular moon yesterday evening. A full moon this time of year is called a flower moon and it certainly lived up to this moniker.

Lunar south is uppermost.
It displays an interesting libration with the crater Clavius close to the southern limb and the crater Plato further from the northern limb.
It is worth comparing this image with the 20d 17h Waning Gibbous Lunar phase taken on 2023-09-06 in my Lunar Phases album. It displays how much our moon appears to wobble in its path around the Earth.
