This is the one of the largest pieces of amber in the world weighing in at 3,524 grams. It has been stolen a number of times and always it has found its way home. The last time it was stolen by some really stupid thieves. They were successful at getting it out of the museum but then couldn't fence it to any one since it is so famous, they apparently hadn't thought of that. So several months later the government but out a reward for the return of the object "no questions asked" and the the thieves tried to collect! They were arrested and the gem was returned.

Klaipeda, Lithuania is the third largest city of Lithuania and the largest port city. Over the past couple of hundred years it has been controlled by the Polish, Prussians, Germans and Russians. Architecture reflects all these periods; the Russians / Soviets were the last occupier and their shadow of poverty and neglect still shows in about one-third of the buildings we saw.

Church of the Holy Spirit; In ca. 1408 Vytautas built the church of the Holy Spirit that was later expanded. In 1501 Alexander Jagiellon gave it to the Dominican Monastery, the oldest in Lithuania. In 1679-88 it was expanded and reconstructed. The walls of the church survived from that period; the interior décor was created in 1749-70, the cupola was reconstructed in 1752-60. In 1844 tsarist authorities closed the monastery down and the church became parochial. Today it serves the Vilnius Polish community.

A few years ago I set up a website about Portuguese immigration to Thetford. I wouldn't know where to start with the Lithuanian, Polish, Latvian or Slovakian waves that have arrived since.
