This wheel's from Lithuania, over 100 years old, and cool as all hell. It's over 5 feet tall with distaff and has a single ratio of about 6:1. The orifice is 38" from the floor, which is probably why it was not expensive at all. I guess having a long waist and being tall has paid off!

Kaunas, also formally known as Kovno, is the second largest city in Lithuania. On the site of the current Kaunas old town at the confluence of two large rivers, a settlement had been established by the tenth century AD. It is not only a city of old traditions, but also a large center of business and industry. See more Lithuania photos www.flickr.com/photos/lithuania2008/sets/72157606057905456/

This is a photo with a history.

It depicts the inner court of the Old Vilnius University (which my dad attended, a long long time ago). It was first taken by my dad, in B&W, back in 1987, which turned out much better, since my dad is a semi-pro. It hung on our living room wall for years, I've watched it throughout my childhood. Every visit to Lithuania I've taken this picture, but due to the different times of the year the shadows never lied quite as in the original. This is the closest to the original I've ever got.

From top left to bottom right: Skrudinta duona su sūriu, apkepti cepelinai and žemaičių blynai.

Or: fried caraway bread sticks with cheese; fried grated potato dumplings with minced (pork?), bacon and sour cream, and half a meat-stuffed potato pancake with a butter and sour cream sauce.

I think you can see the theme here: carbs smothered in dairy, with lashings of meat. Probably one of the more rib-sticking meals I’ve had on this whole jaunt. This was ordered takeaway, with me picking up by bicycle (burning off a small portion of the copious calories to come), otherwise we could have partaken of beetroot soup and some other smattering of vegetables.

All were delicious, but obviously incredibly heavy, and I struggled to finish my portion. The sticks were the most moreish. Could imagine maybe visiting again in winter, to the restaurant itself where I could sample a wider range of the menu (duck, stacks of pancakes, fish, anyone?) but this restaurant does suffer from mixed reviews on its atmosphere. But in terms of takeaway service, it was very efficient and polite.
