Klaipeda was united with Lithuania only in 1923, and even then was closed to tourists during 50 years of Soviet rule following World War II. Today, as the only Lithuanian port, Klaipeda holds a position of great importance to Lithuania’s economics and its connection to the rest of the world.

Cruise ships coming to Klaipeda catch sight not only of the reconstructed port entrance but also of the Curonian Spit National park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entering the port itself, passengers see the Lithuanian Maritime Museum, the only museum of the kind in the Baltic States.

The cruise terminal (built in 2003) is situated by a medieval city castle in the historic city center. A rotating bridge, built in 1855 with reverted iron trusses, cast iron columns and manual rotation mechanism, permits entry into Klaipeda.

Trakai is a historic city and lake resort in Lithuania. It lies 28 km west of Vilnius, capital of Lithuania. There are 200 lakes in the region, of which the deepest is Galvė with its 21 islands. Trakai Castle is built on one of these islands.

A distinctive feature of Trakai is that the town was built and preserved by people of different nationalities. Communities of Karaims, Tatars, Lithuanians, Russians, Jews and Poles lived here side by side.

Please help with location. Thanks!

These ornaments were handmade by Lithuanian schoolkids and given to me by a teacher when I visited her school in 2000. They're made of clay, so they're probably not going to last forever--this is their 17th Christmas with us, and I'm surprised they've survived this long--so I thought I should immortalize them on Flickr. Thanks, Lithuanian kids!

Trakai Island Castle is located in Trakai, Lithuania on an island on the shores of Lake Galvė. The construction of the stone castle was begun in the 14th century. Trakai was one of the main centers of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the castle held great strategic importance. Trakai Castle is an excellent example of Gothic architecture. The staterooms of the palace are decorated with stained-glass and mural paintings, representing the scenes of the life of Grand Duke and his family. Some of these can be seen in other photos on my photostream.

Klaipeda is Lithuania's third city, and it's only commercial port. It has a turbulent history, only becoming part of Lithuania in 1923. Previously the city was German and known as Memel. It was annexed by Hitler in March 1939, and was ruled by him until January 1945 when the city fell to the Red Army. It was the Soviet Union's only ice-free Baltic port, and was closed to Westerners until 1986.
