Vilnius is a city of smiling angels: www.lithuania.travel/en-gb/attractions/little-angels-all-... You can see them unexpectedly anywhere: sitting on the edge of a roof with a roller skates, smiling, standing near various places or sitting on the roofs or corners of various buildings. Sometimes they wear a bow-tie, a scarf or a shawl. This one was spruced up for Lithuanian Centenary: www.lietuva.lt/100/en/lithuania-celebrates-100

During the occupation of Kaunas and the rest of Lithuania by the Soviet Union, the fort was used as a prison and way-station for prisoners being transported to labour camps. After the occupation of Lithuania by Nazi Germany, the fort was used as a place of execution for Jews.

Castle of Trakai .

Trakai Island Castle was built in several phases. During the first phase, in the second half of the 14th century, the castle was constructed on the largest of three lake islands by the order of Grand Duke Kęstutis. The construction of Trakai Island Castle was related to the expansion and strengthening of the Trakai Peninsula Castle. Kęstutis moved his main residence and his treasury to the Island Castle.

The castle suffered major damage during an attack by the Teutonic Knights in 1377. After the assassination of Kęstutis, a power struggle between Jogaila and Vytautas the Great for the title of Grand Duke of Lithuania began. The castle was besieged by both sides. Soon after the reconciliation between Jogaila and Vytautas, the second phase of construction started and continued until 1409. This phase is regarded as the major development in the history of the castle. Apparently, during the truce with the Teutonic Order, the construction works were supervised by the Order's stonemason Radike, four years before the Battle of Grunwald..
