This lightning photo was taken in the summer of 1999. I remember it was quite a blinding bolt, but I only could see the details of it a few days later, when the slide film was developed......

I especially like the framework of small lightning channels in the upper right of the photo.

A composite of lightning strikes over the Constantia Kloof area of Johannesburg. I'm usually not one for doing composites of lightning, but I thought I'd try it. Not sure if I'm happy with this composite though. I probably need more practice.

A quick monsoon storm drops lightning on the southern portion of the Huachuca Mountains.

I took this shot at about 9:30PM on Sunday night, and by 11:30PM I had sold a slight variation of it to the New York Post, where it ran in their Monday morning edition.

Here's what happened:

On Sunday night my wife wanted to go to lower Manhattan, and I went with her to take some shots along the river. I had just set up when it started to rain. Feeling frustrated, I got under cover and decided to take shots of some of the old ships, even though the position was not ideal. But at least it was dry!

Suddenly giant lightning bolts started shooting out of the sky, hitting the ships and all around them, very close to where I was standing! I began shooting them as fast as I could instead of cowering in a ball on the ground, as I probably should have done.

Like a ... well... like a lightning bolt it dawned on me that the lightning was moving toward the Brooklyn Bridge. I grabbed my equipment and ran in that direction... (to be continued)

I was on "A" Mountain just across the I-10 from downtown Tucson when this late monsoon storm rolled in. I enjoy lots of weather when out shooting but this got a bit fierce and eventually chased everyone away!

Witness the raw power of nature as a lightning bolt illuminates the sky over the Mary River floodplain. This stunning display reminds us of the beauty and intensity of the Top End's storms.

A multitude of severe warned storms moved through the NY/NJ/PA metro areas putting on an incredible display of lighting that lasted for many hours.

We had a massive lightning storm and I just kept shooting only to find this guy upon editing...He was throwing bolts all over the place! Well done maestro...well done!

Photograph taken using Olympus ODM's Pro Capture Feature. It was the first time and won't be the last time that I use this remarkable option.

Night of September 10, 2017. This is overlooking Newport Harbor (you can see the Pavilion), Newport Pier and three oil islands offshore of Huntington Beach. The lightning bolts end at the horizon. Extremely unusual for Southern California!

A rare thunderstorm in Seattle, in fact this is the only time I've ever caught a thunderbolt over the skyline as lightning is a some what rare occurrence in the Emerald city. I plan on catching back up with everyone over the next few days. Have a great mothers day weekend friends.

I have recently (September 2023) been going through a major re-organization of both my film and digital images and came across a series of shots I took back in July of 2005 of Corporation Beach in Dennis, Massachusetts, with my first proper DSLR, a Canon 10D (6MP sensor). I reworked some of these and came up with this blend of seven stacked 30-second exposures, each taken one right after the other with the camera mounted on a tripod. I love that, in contrast to the chaos behind them, there is a very peaceful group (including my two children) enjoying sitting around a bonfire on the beach who seem oblivious to the grand display of thunder and lightning that is approaching.

An active storm moved over northern Croatia in the late evening and night of 6/7 August 2017. We drove north from Zadar to the Isle of Vir were we had a great lightning show.

Here the storm produced a so called positive lightning stroke (CG+) over the Velebit mountain range.

This september storm produced dangerous, close lightning strikes at almost the same place, time after the time.....

So it was easy to know where to point the camera and then taking dozens of shots where the lightning could strike.

I was concerned about my safety, so I took shelter in the entrance of my greenhouse. I have many more shots of this event, but this was clearly the best....

I made some Buttons!

Happy to finally catch a big CG strike in Albuquerque, NM.

Here's my entry for the second prompt of RebelLUG's Vignweek 2021 contest, with the theme of historical (being defined as roughly 500 AD to 1800). I wanted to try and do something more out of the box than just medieval or pirates, as I figured that those themes would be done a lot here. So, I went with something from early US history, and chose to depict Benjamin Franklin and his famous kite experiment that helped us understand the connection between lightning and electricity. I'm really happy with how this build turned out, I'm very pleased with how the cloud and lightning bolt turned out, especially after my first attempt at the lightning bolt was pretty garbage. I do wish I could've figured out a better way to hide or reduce the trans-clear bricks but unfortunately I needed the support for the cloud and lightning bolt. Anyway, hope y'all like it and check back for more builds soon!

You can see a close up of Franklin here.

I have no idea what to call this photo, but "Holy Mother of God!" seems apt.

~ Lava Blast and Electric Lightning Bolt Within a Lava Plume #1 ~

Rare and surreal static electric lightning flashes through a massive column of steam, sulfur dioxide, glass particles, ash, rock and instantly created black sand – all generated from a huge volume of molten lava dumping out of a single lava tube that carried it from magma chambers under the flanks of Mauna Loa’s Kilauea volcano further upslope - here on the Big Island.

I first recorded this electric bolt phenomenon here with this photo

I have been asked if all these lava explosions and lightning flashes are loud. Oddly enough, even when I was nervously close to this event the night I took these photos, there was not a single sound to be heard! – That felt strange to me. In the past, when the lava flowing into the sea was tamer, we could hear the crackling and hissing as molten lava met ocean water… but I was not going to get that close to the exploding lava monster in these photos!

Digital downloads and prints of this lava shot and many others can also be found here

What a surprise show tonight!

I got lucky traveling through Vincentown at a spot I've shot from before with good luck and I got to watch as this line of storms that had been kind of parked west of the city finally started to move out as the sun went down. There was so much lightning in this line, it was like a disco. First, C2C was only visible by the brightness in the sky but as this moved in, it started jumping out of the clouds every second. This thing had structure, presenting both a decent shelf cloud and a well formed wall cloud, and so, so, so much lightning.
