Lightning and sunset on Wednesday, June 26, 2019

Lightning producing storms in downtown Jackson, Michigan.

Westside Albuquerque lightning

Lightning bolt captured with the chdk motion detect script.

A quick, and distant "CG" cloud-to-ground lightning bolt strikes looking towards Effingham-Stewardson area this evening around 7pm CDT.

Earlier this afternoon, my husband and I were returning from a trip to Branson, MO.

On the way back I was monitoring conditions as an area of increasing instability and humid and warm air mass along I44 and I-65 was becoming primed for re-development for convection, as last night and early AM rain and storms cleared out in time.

Soon, a linear multicell segment albeit messy fashion of strong-severe storms would conglomerate near the STL area and ESE MO, making way into IL throughout the afternoon into this evening.

As it approached closer to the I57 corridor especially along I70, it began to fizzle out. In its last moments, it really threw down some lightning, unfortunately not timing best for my camera as light was still bright enough to cause overexposure, and white-out images. It really f**king kicked my a** missing out on the better and closer bolts for this reason; proximity and too murky light screwed me out of better and more images.

Thank you for watching my photos, and some of these bolts resulted in thunder channels so loud that it shook our home!

In this scene from a postcard by artist Clare Angell, the words "Merry Christmas" zigzag from house to house as the occupants transmit wireless holiday greetings to one another.

Outside in weather so cold that icicles have formed around the oval border of the illustration, a woman prepares to fling another kind of wireless transmission toward an unsuspecting gent (is it her husband?) who's carrying gift boxes and a holiday wreath as he trudges through the snow with his gloved hands in his coat pockets.

Handwritten message on the other side (no address, stamp, or postmark): "I wish you all a Merry Xmas and a happy New Year. From: Edna Huston."

"Super Atomic Brand. Supercharged Flashlight Crackers. Super size, super report, super power, super flash. Made in Portuguese Macau. Lay on ground, light fuse, get away quickly."

A couple of bolts of lightning reach the ground.

After chasing a small storm front to about 20 miles north of our house, we found a safe place to snap some shots. The lightning was pretty sweet even though it was somewhat tapering off by the time we got setup. I was still able to get some good ones. I love the intricate details of the lines from the lightning. I thought this closeup helps show that detail first-hand.

City lights of Phoenix Arizona with a monsoon lightning thunderstorm creating some action. A cloud to ground strike hitting a transformer making for a big spark in the city. This can be a common sight when out chasing storms. There is also a big green glow ball that is pretty cool. This is from a 2006 storm chase taken with my canon 20D. (I hated that camera) I was very happy when I upgraded it.. Anyway this is a reject from that shoot that I never put out. Not sure what the swirls are in the sky, call it art :-) . I love going back and working the files cause I always leave a few images behind. When you go back they look fresh and are fun to process.

This spring will be year 30 chasing lightning thunderstorms.

Hope you enjoy.

I spent the weekend in atlanta with my family, so tons of photos from that are forthcoming

but for now, have this, which I took on the flight home to nyc

I am SO PLEASED I have always wanted to capture lightning in a photograph and now I have!!

Braidwood, NSW. Click to see the intricate branches of the bolt!

While on holiday in Florida recently i was lucky enough to witness a stunning lightning storm directly opposite where i was staying. Thankfully i had decided to bring my tripod on holiday too so spent the next hour or so attempting to capture the strikes.

On the last day I visited Arches National Park in Utah a thunderstorm popped up just as I was preparing to capture the sunset from the windows area of the park. Since I was already setup, I decided to put the rain cover on my camera and take my chances with the thunderstorm and here's the result :)

I didn't use a lightning trigger, I just set my camera to take continuous photos every 3 seconds and waited to get lucky.

Matthew 1:20... and Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins. NIV

Two bolts of lightning connect the heavens and earth as an electrically charged storm moves towards Winfield from the north.

A powerful electrical storm sizzled and thundered across Goulburn just after 11 pm this evening. I tried a few shots, but after this first and last lightning in the lens I bolted back inside. That was way too close!
