Lighting strike after lightning strike exits a tornado warned storm. Somewhere back there is a tornado that we just couldn't see.

Heavy thunderstorm caused our train to stop. Soon the lightning show started. I set up my camera over my passenger seat and started shooting. This was the best photograph I was able to capture.

Making sure the beach was clear, took this photo from inside vehicle after the storm appeared to be over. There was lightning for hours today, even when it seemed like it was clearing up it continued. Never seen a storm like this before.

Taken for the Jules March 2022 photo challenge.

Half-piers are more fierce and powerful than whole piers. Though, that's probably a biased thought, due to this awesome lightning bolt. I think I can officially declare this pier to be a Superpier.

Took this some minutes after the photo of multiple lightning bolts. At this stage it was already raining heavily (see the splashes on the water) and this particular lightning bolt convinced me that maybe it's a good idea to get out of the way before it's directly overhead. Strobists should envy the illumination of nature's flash, though.

Chasing thunderstorms last night and Pfew... What a thrill!. Particularly when you're in the middle of nowhere, far from the safety of a building, surrounded by kilometers of flat landscape, near coast and surrounded by hundreds of bolts: big, long, bright and scary ones.

Most definitely the heaviest thunderstorm I witnessed in 20 years or so. The weather condition was a heaven for any thunderstorm junky. Changes that you were able to photograph even some beautiful strikes in a row were almost a 100 percent. And yes, I got more nice shots from this series, I'm not finished yet...

However, the experience of photographing thunderstorms with a DSLR is relatively new for me and it has already taught me a couple of lessons for the next time. Apart from technical stuff in regards to exposure and maybe better not mounting an ultra-wide angle again, I learned that when things go really insane a prober shelter is all you need. Fortunately my car provided some immediate and effective safety from being struck by multiple bolts.

After a hot day, 33 degrees, the change was 100% that we'd have some huge thunderstorms yesterday almost covering the entire country, starting in the afternoon somewhere in the Southern provinces of the Netherlands.

Tech info: 30s at f/4, 24mm, ISO 100.

Location: In the middle of nowhere, somewhere in the province of Groningen, the Netherlands.

While many towns and cities across Northern Illinois geared up to celebrate the nation's birthday, a particularly slow-moving but nasty grouping of convective storms made their way east across the Chicagoland area. The City of Aurora was on the ball, and called off their fireworks before the first signs of lightning. Other cities did the same. But some towns either did not, or the patrons thought they could wait it out. Further south and west, as this storm was building, two people were unfortunately struck by lightning in the tiny town of Sheridan. And later, one person was struck in Chicago, just as the fireworks were wrapping up.

I chose to wait it out, as long as conditions would allow, from atop a parking garage in downtown Aurora. It was a surreal experience, as the entire neighborhoods on both sides of the Fox River were lighting off fireworks, some as large as in the city's display. From atop the parking garage, you could see 360 degrees around with both fireworks and lightning going off all around. While I was ecstatic to experience such an event from such a vantage point, I was very disheartened to learn when I got home that people had been hurt not far from where I live. As of July 5th, they were all in critical condition.

Blurry handheld shot sitting at my neighbors front porch. I just got back from the driving range and I was too lazy to go anywhere much less use a tripod.

What do you see as you look at the water? Boats on the water? Lightning? Danger?

Just as we take off for some lovely boating, we have to turn around because we do not like the lightning bolts and dark clouds that suddenly appear. More to come in this series, as a very wild storm appeared out of no where. It was not even on the radar we checked before we left. Notice all of the boats on the water. On a holiday week-end, there are usually many boaters enjoying the sea.

My first ever capture of lightning.

Image of lightning forming from a rain-filled purple storm cloud over El Paso, Texas on July 27, 2015.

Album artwork for my new album, ‘Lit’, set for release Jan 29. The current album, ‘2 Below 0’ & a full discography streams via Spotify & Apple Music. Album art by photographer Dan Jackson in Vancouver.

So as I recall this Friday evening (July 22, 1983) my buddy Jim and I went out in search of a few trains around Kirkland, IL. Summer storms were brewing (as were a few cold ones we probably consumed). This Milwaukee Road eastbound had a red signal on the opposite side, so he had to stop and get talked past the block. I set up the tripod with my trusty Pentax ME Super and a 28 mm wide angle to try and get a bolt of lightning in the rain. Just as he started to move..WHAM! This cloud to ground stroke hit not more than a quarter mile to the north. The train slowly ground past the red signal and I was now very drenched as I climbed back in Jim's 1969 Dodge Dart GT. "Did you see that!" He exclaimed. I told him not only did I see all of it--but I think I felt it too. The roll of Kodachrome 64 came back from processing a week or so later and it was just as impressive then as it is now.

Tonight we had a bit of a storm really close to the house. I went to the balcony and set up to catch me some lightning bolt. Of the 100 or so shots I took, I did indeed and for the first time, manage to catch one or two bolts! Here the biggest of the bunch at 24mm.
