The Lepena Valley.

This is one of the many beautiful valleys of the Julian Alps, just before Soča. You can hike to the Krn lake and further to the top of the Krn. A very recommendable tour that takes some time and leads to an altitude of about 2600m. The small river Lepenica rises at the end of the valley and flows into the Soća after about 5km.

In winter it is very quiet in the upper Sočatal. The road from the north, from Kranjska Gora over the Vršičpass, is not cleared from snow and so hardly any strangers come into the valley.

There is only tourism around of Bovec. There you can go skiing with a cable car on Monte Canin. Back in the eighties, there was still no cable car and the word winter tourism was only slowly emerging.

Even for the nature it is a quiet time and the few colors result in a very special attraction for us photographers.

The potato man.

He was so proud of his small potato harvest and wanted to sell us some.

I had to scan this slide several times until I finally achieved a useful result. The contrast range was just too high. I often have this problem with the very old Kodachrome slides.

In addition to my sporting activities, I have a very great affinity for the mountains. Whether hiking, climbing, biking, skiing or boarding, in the mountains I can switch off, breathe deeply, let my soul dangle. From now on I will show a larger number of photos from the Julian Alps, from the Sočatal, from my beloved Triglavski Narodni Park in my series “The Story of Our Live”. All pictures were taken between 1983 and 2001 on numerous short trips at different times of the year. Usually with my oldest and best friend Harry, with whom I am starting this series in the series today.

The Vršič Pass is the highest mountain pass in Slovenia that can be used by general road traffic and connects Kranjska Gora with the village of Trenta in the Soča Valley. The pass forms the watershed for Soča (southern course) and Save (northern course).

The winter closure begins at the end of October and ends at the beginning of May.

In 1989 I drove over the closed pass road with Severin, who was six years old.

There are many of these in San Francisco, but they are few and far between in Los Angeles.

I originally thought that everyone in America lived in houses like this because they do in the movies. But only one day in LA disabused me of that notion.

This is the Hale House, originally built in 1885, now part of the Heritage Square Museum in Montecito Heights, Los Angeles, just north of Chinatown, together with some other 19th century mansions, most of which would otherwise have been razed to make room for shopping centres or other modern conveniences.

Apart from that open air museum, there are at least two places that I know of where rows of old houses still stand and are inhabited.

Landscape Arch, Arches National Park, Utah, shot on film in late October of 1998

I don't think this arch will be around very much longer (geologically speaking). When I was there, the trail beneath the arch was already closed for safety reasons because huge slabs of rock had fallen recently.

But in the background, erosion already appears to be sculpting two new arches from the rock.

With little Severin in a canoe on Lake Bohinj, I close the series about Soča, the Triglavski Narodni Park, from this wonderful area.

The next few days I'll be on vacation without flickr. We'll see you again with the current pictures from Abruzzo from mid-June.

Turquoise blue and crystal clear, the Soča River (Isonzo in Italian) meanders through the Triglav National Park in the valley of the same name.
