I recommend going to everyone, it's got amazing views and stuff to climb on- which is always a plus.
Close miss
Unfortunately, this Kali train with 140 291 was triggered a little too late in the beautiful Haunetal south of Neukirchen, so that the locomotive already touched the right catenary mast. With the first entry-level DSLR, fast image sequences were not yet possible, so that with moving motifs you had to concentrate on a targeted "shot", which sometimes worked better and sometimes worse. Nevertheless, one can be happy about every photo with which one has documented the last years of use of the 140 series, which was already severely decimated in 2008, in a halfway reasonable way.
Curtis Knapp, to quote him, is probably "the best known unknown photographer!" Through the years, Curtis has given the world some of the most striking and recognizable portraits- from Madonna's first magazine cover, to Andy Warhol portraits at The Factory, Mick Jagger, Dennis Hopper, Steve Buscemi, Tim Burton, and on and on. His work is evocative and personal. He is a master with a camera.
We were SO honored to meet Curtis, thanks to Flickr friend, John, in New Orleans. :) And we SO appreciate the time they gave us, the stories we enjoyed!
Check out some of his fantastic portraits just as a start to seeing the work he has produced:
Similar conditions today as 2019 misty start then the sun burns through. Today would have been my first visit here in about two years, except the road was closed, unfortunate as we haven't seen any sunshine for about two weeks now.
Decided to take the dog for a long walk instead - so he was happy!
This morning at Knapp's Loch. I turned up for sunrise and was disappointed with the forecast as it was supposed to be bright with scattered clouds. Having checked again on my phone app, I decided to hang around for an hour.
So I guess i should be reasonable pleased with the result.
I took two shots and pinned them together.
I spent an amazing evening shooting Knapp's Castle with Flickr friend Jean . With the sky around Santa Barbara full of ash from the La Brea Fire , I knew we would get some interesting light...little did we know what we were in store for. For over an hour the sky continued to mutate, second by second through an amazing spectrum of Orange, Yellow, and Red. Our cameras sounded off like two machine guns as we shot sequence after sequence.
After admiring so many HDR shots on Flickr, I finally broke down after this session and aquired Photomatix Pro 3.2. I really like this software for it's easy and subtle approach to HDR...and at $99.00 it's way cheaper than CS4!
This is a very popular shooters destination. If anyone is interested, I have geotagged this shot.

The bottom of an empty salt pond in a remote area of San Francisco Bay known as the Knapp Tract. Vehicle tracks are visible in the large version and these lend scale to the scene. I have no idea who was out there or why.

A classic early morning 'Knapps Loch' view from a recent trip to this lovely little loch that seems to have its own microclimate...
Much nicer on black (press 'L' )...
As Curtis told us the first time we met him- "The most famous unknown photographer!" I'm sure that's not true, but it was funny. He has many stunning portraits and shots in his portfolio- most famous, maybe for the Island magazine cover of Madonna! But that is not even my favorite! He has done some fabulous Andy Warhol shots, as well as a Dennis Hopper that I absolutely love! Then there are all the OTHERS! and wait- his florals- gotta see!
I am sure if Curtis sees this he will have a fit! But you guys need to see his work, if you don't know of him already. :)
