Hi everyone it's @grammy1 for Family Matters. I have had a three months sabbatical :-) Visit @grammy1 and scroll to see what I have been up to. Family Matters will now appear on Thursdays and as always it will run along with the daily forum. .

For all our new followers we are about excellent family photography however you might interpret family and always remember that pets are family too.

#GOLDENHOUR

#JJ_FORUM_0895- @iamzachrogers inspired our "Golden Hour" theme today with this submission from our "What Drives You?" event a couple days ago. His photo essay was one of my favorites. Make sure you check it out.

#JJ_INSTATIP - Here's a little tip for today's theme. What photographers call the "Golden Hour" is the half hour before and after sunset or sunrise. The light is appealing at this time because it is warm and comes from the side not overhead.

.

Most importantly though, the light is coming from a large source. Half the sky and not the relatively tiny source of the sun itself. This makes for soft light. Your camera likes soft light because its easier for it to capture the smaller difference in shadows and highlights. "Nerd speak" for this is a reduced dynamic range. :-).

.

If you're shooting a portrait your subject will like soft light because it flatters skin and features. Portraits, landscapes, basically anything you shoot during this time of day will look better than mid day. Give it a try. :-).

.

Today's theme is one of those artsy experimental type of assignments. Aka "Huh? What's he talking about this time!?!?" ;-).

.

Shoot through something like leaves or grass maybe. Anything natural is a great start actually. Windows and doors will work, but here's the key. The picture shouldn't be about the window. The window, or bush, is a tool. Let me explain.

.

I love this technique. If you've been paying attention at all you'll know I am all about depth in an image. Shooting through something is a HREAT way to create depth in a shot. Find some in your gallery to share today or better yet. Let's get off our butts and make a new picture today. I will. Promise. :-).

.

WHAT THE HECK IS #JJ?.

Are you new to the community? It's not as confusing as it seems at first. :-). Here's the deal.

Sometimes it can be hard to get your pictures seen and find inspiring photographers to follow. That's why I created the forum 3 years ago. It's a place to come together for inspiration and encouragement.

.

Every morning, NYC time, we make a post announcing our new theme and tag. Your job is to tag images that fit the theme. You can use shots you have already posted but we really love to see the theme inspire you to find new shots. The @jj_editors and I scour the tag and repost our favorite submissions through out the day. Over half a million people might see your pic! Pretty cool stuff.

We are ALL about keeping things simple, but in the spirit of our motto, "Create to connect", we ask that you follow our only "rule". We call it the 1-2-3 rule. For every 1 image you tag, comment on 2 in the tag and like 3 others.

.

Glad you're here. Can't wait to see your shots. Speak up if you have questions or comments. We like to think this is the friendliest place on the internet. :-).

The other day I finally received the can with one of my Instagram pictures I submitted to the #briskpic challenge. Its quite bigger than I expected. Also, I'm still not sure if I'll be drinking it. Knowing me, I can probably resist for a few years. Or maybe I should save it for a special day... then again, I don't know how long these will last. I guess time will tell.

Well it's official. :-) We are so happy to congratulate @jeddjedd on winning our Open Road Challenge Sweepstakes this year and a new FIAT 500L. One of his submissions was chosen, at random, by @FIATusa. We would be jumping for joy too. ;-) It's really a great car Jed.

And there's more. :-) Jedd will be attending the US Open of Surf with @FIATusa this year. Unfortunately, they've only got space to take Jedd along but. . . YOUR submissions from the challenge might be chosen to be a part of the video, documenting this year's @FIATusa Extreme Team adventure. Not as good as a trip to Cali I know. ;-). Still very cool though. We saw the guys shooting in Seattle. We are all in for a treat.
