Hey it's @kevinkuster posting.
@Instagram and our #jj community is not perfect!
People get angry, jealous, hurt, confused, envious, competitive and frustrated here every day.
Comments can sometime ruin people's day. Social media like all mankind is flawed. However, without the capacity to get it wrong we would not have the capacity to also get it right.
Because man was created with freewill, we all have the equal capacity to hurt as well as to love. Today, let us consciously choose to LOVE as best we can for one of our own.
@instafraner is currently experiencing a very difficult family situation. You can read about it on his personal feed.
To support Fran's son Diego and his family, please consider lighting a candle, saying a prayer and capturing the moment.
#Candle_light_works.
It doesn't matter to me what you call it... prayer, karma, good will, positive vibes, energy, healing thoughts, etc. Call it whatever motivates you to respond.
The important thing is that we all collective decide to give Diego, @instafraner and his family our time, talents, attention and ultimately the express of our love durning this time of great difficultly.
Please consider posting the words you said as you lit the candle for Diego so Fran and his family can read them and be encouraged. "It is always better to light a candle than to curse the darkness" and I believe the actions of many can light and change the world.
Thank you. @kevinkuster

Hey it's @kevinkuster posting.
#jj community I need your help!
I just pulled up to what used to be my local photography camera store and after 75 years, they've gone out of business.
To me, this is another indicator on how powerful the mobile photography movement is and will continue to be in the future.
I am so happy to be a part of the mobile photography movement, however, I can't help but be a little sad right now.
I realize that the very thing I'm doing right now, shooting, editing and share my photo all on my phone is what killed photography stores like this.
So, here are my questions:
Will photography stores like this be missed?
Will everything that is not a mobile camera just be ordered online?
And most importantly, where do you think the future of personal photography and professional photography is going?
I look forward to reading your answers as I sit in a empty parking lot!
Goodbye Calumet and best of luck to all of their wonderful employees. Sincerely @kevinkuster.

nageshkr: Thanks for the questions, @kevinkuster ! I sympathize with Calumet.
1. Will photography stores like this be missed?
At least in India, a country of more than 1.2 Billion people, photography stores were hard to come by for a majority of them, so it is unlikely they will be missed. Yes, I do see that many in America, Asia and Europe may turn nostalgic when stores like Calumet close down. Basically, like any other business (including big ones like Kodak), each has to be relevant to the clients it serves, as time moves on
2. Will everything that is not a mobile camera just be ordered online?
That is happening, yes, but there are still some places one goes to physically...a good restaurant, a show, to the movies....so I am sure there will be specialty printing and photo development shops that will still have a moderate clientele
3. And most importantly, where do you think the future of personal photography and professional photography is going?
The analogy is books and publishing - it is easy now to write your own book electronically, then publish it on Amazon - but to make a meaningful impact, one still needs publishers and sales agents and a medium to advertise one's novels. So while everyone may imagine that the latest Samsung Galaxy S5 or the iPhone 5S will make them a professional-level photographer, discerning audiences will still separate the wheat from the chaff. There will always be a difference between personal and professional photography
butterfly109: @kevinkuster these things heavy my heart, as well, but look at it this way: everything -- everything -- is in a constant state if flux. And when changes come, possibilities open up, as well. It may be sad, but believe in the amazing possibilities and adventures that are out there for anyone whose lives have changed from this business closing -- and from the world shifting everywhere -- in photography and in everything, the Universe can imagine greater for us than we can. Trust.
carlaeez: it makes me sad that calumet is closing as i spent so much time and money there when i was a photo student at columbia college. i loved that store but haven't been there in many years. the smell of developing chemicals makes me long for a darkroom but i sometimes barely have time to edit in an app on my phone let alone a darkroom that i would have to personally take care of. change is inevitable. i will probably never use the enlargers or jobo processor that i own, but the nostalgia of it all makes me hold onto the idea that just maybe.... @kevinkuster
instagram.com/she.smiles: Yes they are missed! I'm lightweight looking for a place to develop a roll of B&w film that I found in my old camera bag. And I don't want to give it to Walmart to develop
modchik: I'm devastated that's my go to rental place I was stuck without a lens this week when I went to my local Calumet. Knowing my guys at the store they often commented that their only business was rentals, it's not that people aren't buying gear it's the sales tax issue, why pay upwards of 9% when u can buy on Amazon, Adorama or B&H with zero tax. That's why I didn't buy a used 400mm from them, 1200.00 loss of a sale.
mroseillier: I was very sad to hear the news. Normally my go to camera store is B&H for purchases , but for rentals in LA it was calumet. I knew the people behind the counter etc... I purchased a lens from them two weeks ago bc they were offering no tax , I received it in the mail just two days before they closed. Luckily I wasn't planning on returning it!
mroseillier: @rociopearce
kingdavid73: Stores mark up prices like crazy. If anything, I'd say being able to shop online is killing any specialty stores

shootz_la: @tonystx LA icon yes, LA city definitely not. Just sayin, there's way better spots that ARE Los Angeles. Either way can't wait to go to this.

kburke00: Hi guys @joshjohnson @kevinkuster and gal @jessicaabt ~ I see you are driving down the 101 from SF to LA. May I suggest you take route 154 after the town of Los Alamos. It's actually a short cut (don't tell anyone) and will take you through the most quintessential parts of California. Past Los Olivos (where the movie Sideways was made), rolling golden hills with old soul oak trees, vineyards, Lake Cachuma (mostly dry due to the drought) over the Cold Spring Bridge and then you drop into Santa Barbara with a spectacular view of the coast line and the ocean!!! Not to be missed if you can do it. You all inspire greatly and I'm grateful to be a part of the jj community

Hey it's @kevinkuster posting.
Have you heard about our @FIATUSA Open Road trip this summer? Just like last years trip someone will win a NEW FIAT 500L!
To get you guys pumped up about possibly winning your own vehicle, I reached out to last years car winner @littlecoal and asked him a few questions.
KK. What is your favorite thing about about your Fiat 500L?
LC. We love everything about it! My wife has even heard a few cat-calls or "hey, baby"s, so I think their "Sexy People" marketing has worked(although neither of those things has happened while I'm driving, so maybe the driver plays into that.) Seriously though, the family took it to Indianapolis for a quick weekend in March and I drove it to New York in April and the gas mileage was great, the ride was amazing and even at 6'4" there is more than enough room for me in it. It's almost become Instagram's car, as I've had an opportunity to share it with so many IGers/JJers, when we meet up. There have been close to 30 other IGers/JJers that I've been able to take places in it already, just not at the same time!
KK. How do people respond when you tell them you won the car from a photography contest?
LC. It's a bit different each time, but it always starts with, "Wait...what? ...you won a car in a photo contest? ...on Instagram? ...using your iPhone?!" It's a fun story to share, because it's really a story about the power of Instagram, the creative community at @Joshjohnson, and incredible ways the Lord has blessed my family in ways that I could have never imagined and that is a story I will never tire of telling.
KK. What is the top speed you have pushed your 500L
LC. As an elementary school teacher, a parent, and a role model in the community, my answer is...whatever the legal speed limit was at that location, but when I change the speedometer to kilometers/hour it certainly makes it feel like it's much faster...it's an Italian car, after all!

Hey it's @kevinkuster posting our theme for today.
Josh needed a little break so I am posting today's theme.
First, I want to welcome all our newest jj members! Thanks for joining us and pushing us past the 550,000 followers.
Now a little about me. I have one son and feel being a dad is my greatest role. I have been lucky to have had a 20+ year career in photography. However, after 18 of those years at Playboy Magazine I got to the point where I completely hated photography! Totally burned out.
I actually stopped taking pictures personally for five years. It was during that time when I discovered mobile photography @Instagram and the #jj community. Man did that moment change my creative life!
One day I sent Josh an email, told him I loved what he was doing and suggested a theme. Josh liked the idea and said "Hey why don't you help me build this community? Here is my password. Can you start posting tomorrow?" Crazy but all true.
Now, I am kinda the guy, behind the guy, behind the community that gets things done.
I feel really honored and blessed to serve each of you every day. I am constantly blown away by all of the talent and friendships that are discovered here. I believe people "come here for the highlight but stay for the community!" Oh and I also shave my head every morning. To me it's like superman putting on his cape to begin his adventures.
Today's theme is: ALL ABOUT YOU.
Tag: Tag: #jj_forum_0815.
Post a new picture, tag an old image, or edit and repost a new shot. It doesn't what kind of image HOWEVER, in your comment please tell us something about you so we all get to know you better!
Great to meet you and remember... Keep scrolling jj nation!

Hey it's @kevinkuster posting.
While driving the other day with my parents, we were discussing Instagram, the #jj community and how much people REALLY connect.
Although my parents "kinda" get what we do here, it all clicked for them when I said "it's like the modern day version of a pen pal." Bingo! Connection made for ma and paw Kuster.
I feel so lucky and honored to arrive in a new place and just put up a post asking "who wants to meet up while I am on vacation?" 24 hours later 10 people show up to meet and shoot pictures. Some people even drove 2 hours to attend!
That commitment shows the power of connection. Connection is the strength of this #jj community!
I believe ALL people are hard-wired to connect. It's part of the human condition. It's part of our DNA. Deep personal relationships are the most rewarding gift in life.
Every relationship begins with a first meeting and although first meetings can sometime feel strange, forced or bizarre, they are worth the cost. We've all heard the voices inside our head that say "Don't go. This is stupid. You don't know these people." Etc, etc, etc.
Please always remember to reject those negative voices and step out and connect!
