I met Jim while riding my bike around Neenah and Menasha, WI last week. Jim was out in his yard tending his tulips. I stopped to take some shots of his tulips and ended up having a nice conversation with Jim. I learned that Jim is 86 and worked as a custodian at Lawrence College before he retired. Jim shared with me that several days often pass between conversations with other people. He also shared that he has been taking care of his wife who has severe dementia for ten years. She never leaves the house.

Processing was done with Camera +(iPhone app), Aperture 3, and Snapseed on my iMac.

I tried to catch every performer, but if I missed you, I'm sorry. You may have been too quick for my lens!

These images were taken at the Doug Fir Lounge in Portland, Oregon, on October 24th, 2008. It was an awesome cd release party for "(D)early Departed," a compilation cd to benefit the Lone Fir Cemetery.

Quote from the site:

"What do an axe murderess, a beloved physician, a successful crimper, a poet with a hankering for drowning, and a French prostitute with a heart of gold have in common?

They are all permanent residents of historic Lone Fir cemetery, one of Portland’s historical, architectural, and horticultural gems. And now, they come to life in a new collection of original songs by some the city’s best musicians.

(D)early Departed: True Lies Unearthed from Lone Fir Cemetery pays tribute to some of Portland’s most colorful deceased citizens. Proceeds from the benefit CD support upcoming restoration projects for Lone Fir Cemetery.

Musicians include: Adam Shearer & Adam Selzer, Al James, Amelia, Chris Robley & The Fear of Heights, Holcombe Waller, James Beaton, Jesse Emerson, Jim Brunberg, Leigh Marble, Matt Sheehy, Nick Jaina, Pete Krebs, Ritchie Young, Storm Large, The Taciturns"

These photos are out of order - I'm sorry - I had traveled and one of my cameras was an hour off of the other.

It was a fantastic show - amazing music, wonderful storytellers, happy times. The end of the evening was especially fun - everyone came out onstage and sang "Don't Fear the Reaper." TOTALLY rocked. :D

Jim was our dinner guest at hunting camp a week ago. We stopped by his house in the late afternoon to extend a dinner invitation for that evening. We set the time at about 6 but told him to come over when ever he liked. He arrived about 5:15 on his 4 wheeler . He walked in took off his hat and coat and introduced himself to me, Ray , our host has known him for several years.

The first thing I noticed was Jim was armed. He carried a .22 cal. target pistol, he said there were reports of coyotes in the area. I always like to have a feel for the disposition of my dinner companions especially when they are "packin". In "this neck of the woods" it is quite common for people and firearms to be close to one another.

Jim is 73 yr. old , married once, no more, two daughters and two granddaughters, both infants , he said it took him a long time to settle down. He is an army veteran, in the early50's, spent most of his tour in Fort Knox as a diesel mechanic,he rebuilt tanks, then in his work life he did the same thing , a diesel mechanic . He lives alone, cuts and splits his own winter supply of fire wood. He doesn't like to venture to far from home. The day following our meeting he was scheduled to "go to town" to do some banking and get his "provisions" he wanted to be back home asap. Home , or the woods is his comfort zone, not town

He won't use credit cards or sign up for cable TV because "the bastards" want to know to much about ya.

When Jim was ready to leave we sent much our camps "provisions" with him , we were breaking up camp the next day so we had to eat it, take it home or throw it away so Jim got much of what we brought but didn't use. It seems this is quite common in Jim's life, local people are always dropping things off at Jim's house.

All in all Jim was a very congenial character, interesting to talk to, grossly independent . A content old soul.
