The terms "interior design" and "decor" are used with the same frequency from 1981 to 2001, and then suddenly in February of 2001 the word "decor" almost completely disappears. The only possible explanation for this, we think, is an editorial style policy discouraging the use of the word "decor." This is curious since there are so few design terms that specifically related to the design of interiors. It's hard to say if what looks like increasing interest in interior design between 2001 and 2009 is actually rising interest or just the fact that the term "interior design" is now carrying the load that the term "decor" used to share.

This graph demonstrates that uses of the terms "modernism" and "midcentury modern" are slowly but steadily increasing in the NYT. We also chose two modernist designers, Eames and Corbusier, to see if there was any difference between American and European designers. Perhaps because of their international fame, the occurrences were similar.

The term "retro" simply didn't exist in the 80s. The term vintage did, and its use has been steadily on the rise. Retro has been on the rise too, until a steap drop-off a year or so ago. Why is this?

Needed an excuse to learn how to do effective string searching and manipulation in C++. The Wikileaks.com release of 520,000 lines of pager transcripts seemed like a good enough excuse to get in there and start playing. For now, I am just searching for the words 'fire', 'wtc', 'tower', 'explosion', and 'plane', hence the notice from Chesepeake Home regarding a firplace installation. Not sure what I am going to do with all this text... definitely is an interesting way to relive that particular morning... on that particular day, I slept in and didn't wake until after the two towers had already collapsed. Definitely triggering some interesting emotional responses.

"IBC Boys Night" at Mark's apartment with Kevin's charcuterie to start, followed by Ben's mussels with fennel and white wine and then homemade Cassoulet (a la Mark & Jer), served with beaujolais of course! Then some amazing Armenian Cognac (thanks Haig) and Mike's famous Withers' Family Secret 45 minute lemon meringue pie.
