Subadult Long-tailed Jaeger (Stercorarius longicaudus) at Wisconsin Point, Douglas County, Wisconsin, 19 October 2010. Sixth consecutive day at this inland location at the western tip of Lake Superior. Pomarine (S. pomarinus) and Parasitic Jaegers (S. parasiticus) were present for direct comparison on the 15th, 16th, and 18th. Note bill size and shape, wing shape, lack of breast band, and length of tail.

I now think this one might be a Pomarine. The double flash is rather faint, but the big fat chest, the thick bill, and the extensive white on the primaries all point to a Pomarine. Also the short rounded tail tip, bi-colored bill, and broad wings. The main negative I see is the buffy appearance on the head, though the lighting might have been a factor there. I am no expert of course, so would value other opinions who know better.

I find alcohol bottles actually really cool, the patterns on the stickers etc. really creative and almost pretty but sharp and interesting
At 12, Jaeger is still very much the protector. Here he's coming in from patrolling the coyote trail: the light is the only source at night, from the front porch. I played around a bit with lighting effects to soften the light in the background.
I love the little white spot on his head, something that appeared last year. And the Machiavellian eyebrows...he's aging gracefully!
